The Iranian human rights athletic organization United for Navid and Iranians on social media on Saturday slammed the International Olympics Committee for posting a tweet in praise of an Iranian marksman Javad Foroughi who won a gold medal at the Tokyo games because he is a member of a US sanctioned terrorist organization.

In a statement sent to The Jerusalem Post, United For Navid wrote that it "considers the awarding of an Olympic Gold Medal to Iran marksman Javad Foroughi not only a catastrophe for Iranian sports but also for the international community, and especially the reputation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The 41-year old Foroughi is a current and longtime member of a terrorist organization [IRGC].”

The Olympics sent a congratulatory tweet to its over six million followers with a picture of Foroughi, writing “Golden debut! First place medal.Javad Foroughi wins gold in the air pistol men's final, breaking the Olympic Record on his first Olympic appearance. Well done! @ISSF_Shooting #Shooting.”

United for Navid is named after the executed champion Greco-Roman wrestler Navid Afkari, who was imprisoned and tortured by the Islamic Republic of Iran for his participation against the theocratic regime in 2018. The regime executed Navid in September, 2020. Masih Alinejad ,the Iranian-American journalist and women's rights activist, along with the Iranian-American former Greco-Roman wrestler Sardar Pashaei ,spearhead the United for Navid campaign. Pashaei coached Iran’s Greco-Roman national team and was a decorated international wrestler.

United for Navid said the IRGC "has a history of violence and killing not only of Iranian people and protesters there, but also innocent people in Syria, Iraq and Lebanon. The IRGC is a designated foreign terrorist organization by the United States."

Iran's regime has a played a critical role in advancing Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad's war against his population, which has resulted in the deaths of over 500,000 people in the fragmented country.

United For Navid noted that it wrote “to the IOC earlier this year and warned them about the possible presence of the military and even politicians serving as athletic representatives of Iran. Officials of the IOC never took any action. Awarding an Olympic gold medal to a member of a terrorist organization is an insult to other athletes and a black mark on the IOC. United for Navid calls for an immediate investigation by the IOC, and until an investigation is completed the suspension of any medal award.”

Ellie Cohanim, the Iranian-born former Deputy Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism at the US State Department, tweeted: “What a disgrace for the Olympics. This guy has been outed as a member of the IRGC a designated terrorist organization.” Twitter, the micro-blog platform, was ablaze with criticism of the IOC from Iranians for the IOC praise of the IRGC member.

The Iranian-American human rights activist Lawdan Bazargan tweeted: Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corp is the equivalent of SS or ‘political soldiers’ of the Nazi Party of Hitler. With the last US forces on the way out of Afghanistan, US President Joe Biden assured President Ashraf Ghani of US diplomatic and humanitarian support on Friday as Taliban advances piled pressure on the US-backed government in Kabul.

In a phone call, Biden and Ghani "agreed that the Taliban’s current offensive is in direct contradiction to the movement’s claim to support a negotiated settlement of the conflict," a White House statement said.

Biden has set a formal end to the US military mission in Afghanistan for August 31 as he looks to disengage from a conflict that started after al Qaeda attacked the United States on September 11, 2001.

Violence has risen sharply since the withdrawal plan was announced in April, with the Taliban launching offensives, taking districts and important border crossings, and encircling or closing in on several provincial capitals.

The Taliban control about half of Afghanistan's district centers, the senior US general said this week, indicating a rapidly deteriorating security situation.

Biden told Ghani the United States would remain engaged diplomatically "in support of a durable and just political settlement," the White House said.

The United States is also preparing to begin evacuating thousands of Afghan applicants for special immigration visas (SIVs) who risk retaliation from Taliban insurgents because they worked for the US government.

Biden on Friday authorized up to $100 million from an emergency fund to meet "unexpected urgent" refugee needs stemming from the situation, the White House said.

Biden also authorized the release of $200 million in services and articles from the inventories of US government agencies to meet the same needs, it said.

The State Department condemned the Taliban's targeted attacks on former interpreters and other Afghans as well as the destruction of infrastructure.

"We vehemently condemn the targeted attacks, the destruction of vital infrastructure, as well as other attacks against the people of Afghanistan," spokeswoman Jalina Porter said at a regular news briefing.

Educated Afghans - especially women and girls who were barred from school and most work under Taliban rule - have voiced alarm at the insurgents rapid advance, as have members of ethnic and sectarian minorities persecuted under the Taliban's severe interpretation of Sunni Islam.

The first batch of Afghan evacuees and their families is expected to be flown before the end of the month to Fort Lee, a US military base in Virginia, where they will wait for the final processing of their visa applications.

About 2,500 Afghans could be brought to the facility, about 30 miles (48 km) south of Richmond, the Pentagon said on Monday.

Reports from Gulf media indicate concern that the US signaling a withdrawal from Afghanistan and troop personnel reductions in Iraq, could be part of a larger post-American power vacuum in the Middle East if things continue in this direction. “It seems that Washington has realized the danger of creating a vacuum in the hotbeds of tension, after terrorist organizations with different orientations and loyalties began to take advantage of the opportunity,” Al-Ain media reported on Saturday.

The report said that the US has been hastily packing its bags in Afghanistan and that this follows a pattern of the US drawing down troop numbers across a swath of territory from the borders of Pakistan to Somalia and the Sahel region in Africa. But the US has broken its “long silence” with new airstrikes “against those who exploit the vacuum left by its withdrawal.” This appears to refer to airstrikes in Somalia but also relates to the US using airstrikes in Syria against pro-Iran militias and the possibility the US will use airstrikes in Afghanistan to slow the Taliban.

The International Judo Federation suspended on Saturday an Algerian judoka and his coach for withdrawing from the Tokyo Olympics before his event started, after the draw set him on course for a match against an Israeli.

Fethi Nourine and his coach Amar Benikhlef gave individual statements to the media announcing their withdrawal from the competition to avoid meeting an Israeli athlete during the event, the IJF said in a statement.

Nourine's withdrawal was "in total opposition to the philosophy of the International Judo Federation," it said.

"The IJF has a strict non-discrimination policy, promoting solidarity as a key principle, reinforced by the values of judo," it said.

The IJF launched an investigation into the case, leading to a temporary suspension of Nourine and Benikhlef.

The Algerian Olympic Committee withdrew the accreditation for both the athlete and coach and would send them home, applying sanctions accordingly, the IJF said, without further elaboration on the type of sanctions.

Attempts to reach Nourine for comment were not successful.

On Friday, Nourine told Algerian media that his political support for the Palestinian cause made it impossible for him to compete against Israeli Tohar Butbul.

The 30-year-old was due to face Sudan's Mohamed Abdalrasool on Monday for his first match in the men's 73 kg class. A victory would have paired him with Butbul - who has a first-round bye - in the next round.

It is not the first time that Nourine has withdrawn from competition to avoid facing an Israeli opponent. He pulled out of the 2019 world championships in Tokyo for the same reason.

Tensions in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict flared again this year as confrontations in contested Jerusalem triggered cross-border clashes.

Athletes from other countries, including Iran and Egypt, have also in the past refused to compete against Israelis.

A Hezbollah commander and commander in the Iranian-backed Liwa Fatemiyoun militia were both killed recently, with the details of their deaths remaining unclear as of Saturday night. The Saudi news outlet Al-Arabiya reported that the two died in Syria.

Hezbollah-affiliated media reported on Saturday that the Hezbollah commander Imad al-Amin, from Deir Kifa in southern Lebanon, was killed while "carrying out his jihad duty," without providing further details.

Iranian media announced on Saturday as well that Ahmed Qureshi, a commander in the Liwa Fatemiyoun militia, died due to wounds he suffered while fighting in Syria.

Qureshi, originally from the village of Baraghan, located north of Karaj in Iran, served in the past in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the Basij. His father was killed during the Iran-Iraq War. Qureshi served as part of the Iranian-backed militia in Syria since 2013 and was reported to have fought in operations with former IRGC Quds Force commander Qasem Soleimani.

Neither report indicated when or how the two were injured or died, although two Israeli airstrikes were reported earlier this week.

The reports of the deaths of the two commanders comes just days after two Israeli airstrikes were reported in eastern and northwestern Syria.

On Monday, Syrian air defenses were activated to respond to an alleged Israeli airstrike near Aleppo. The airstrike targeted a research center in the area, according to Lebanese media.

The Russian Defense Ministry announced later in the week that Syrian air defenses intercepted seven out of the eight missiles allegedly fired by Israeli aircraft, with one missile hitting a research center in al-Safirah.

On Wednesday night, an alleged Israeli airstrike targeted the Dabaa military airport in the Homs governorate of northwestern Syria. The airstrike was carried out from over Lebanon. Material damage was reported by Syrian media.

Israeli Olympian Avishag Samberg won a bronze medal in taekwondo in the Olympic Games in Tokyo on Saturday.

Stunning fans at her first Olympic Games at only 19 years old, Samberg's win marks Israel's first medal in the Tokyo 2020 games.

Samberg competed in the under 49 kg weight class, edging out the Turkish Rokia Yildirim with a score of 27-22 during the battle for the bronze.

Samberg said after her winning fight that she "had a difficult day."

"I lost in the morning, it was a bit difficult," she said, thanking her coach.

"I have an Olympic medal at 19," she said in disbelief. "I worked so hard all the way. I withstood the pressure, I believed it would happen."

"I knew the draw was very difficult," she said, adding that she "looked [Yildirim] in the eyes and did it. I said to myself, 'so what if I'm the youngest?' I will give everything I have. Hope this is not my last medal. It feels like a dream to me."

"I think I should have fun," the fresh medalist continued, "I worked hard enough all the way and it's my time to show what I worked so hard on in training and around. Happy I was able to bring it on and withstood the pressure."

Quick to congratulate the medalist was Israel's Culture and Sports Minister, Chili Tropper, who said "Avishag Samberg has made the dream a reality and brings us a first medal with an amazing opening to the Olympics."

"When I met Avishag before the Olympics I saw a modest, ambitious athlete who is willing to do anything to achieve," Tropper added, concluding his statement with the message "Avishag - we are proud of you."

Foreign Minister and Alternate Prime Minister Yair Lapid also quickly congratulated Samberg quickly, tweeting out "Medal for Avishag! Honor to Israel!!!"

President Isaac Herzog called Samberg on Saturday evening, congratulating her for "making history" and "being an inspiration to many children in Israel," while Prime Minister Naftali Bennett described her achievement as a "prime example of determination and the power of will."

Also on Saturday, Israeli Olympian Misha Zilberman defeated an Indian athlete ranked 15th in the world in Saturday's Badminton competition. Zilberman, ranked 47th in the world, will play again on Monday.

This is the 32-year-old’s third Olympic Games following appearances in both 2012 and 2016.

Zilberman was the first Israeli badminton representative at the Games in 2012 where he placed 33rd in the singles competition. He improved his standing in the Summer Olympics in 2016, finishing 14th overall. Misha also won gold medals in the Maccabi Games in 2013 and 2017 in both singles and mixed doubles with his mother as his partner. At the European Games in 2019, he competed in singles and earned a bronze medal for Team Israel.

Israeli gymnast Artem Dolgopyat qualified for the finals of the Men's floor exercise on Saturday from the first place ranking overall after setting an impressive score of 15.20 in the exercise he performed.

The Israeli competed in the first group. Though, later in the day, the other two groups of gymnasts also competed, and at the end of the competition day, Dolgopyat continued to rank first.

The position will not help Dolgopyat in the final, which is set to be held in a week, and the score he earned during the qualifiers will be reset.

Israeli Judoka Shira Rishony, 25, who competed in the women's Judo under-48 kilogram category, advanced to the competition for a bronze medal, where she was defeated by a Ukrainian Judoka, Israeli media reported Saturday.

Rishony, who won a silver medal in Paris at the 2015 Grand Slam event, made it to the quarter finals, where she was bested by the Mongolian Judoka

Expectations from Rishony were not very high as she only qualified for Rio courtesy of one of two additional berths handed to the European Judo Union in her weight category, missing out on an automatic place as one of the top 14 athletes in the rankings.

Israeli artistic gymnast Alexander Shatilov will not advance to Olympic Artistic Gymnastic finals after receiving a score of 13.5 in preliminary rounds Saturday.

Uzbekistan-born Shatilov, 34, has battled to return after injury and illness in order to compete in Tokyo this summer for his fourth Games.

Shatilov’s greatest accomplishments include reaching the finals at the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics as well as a gold medal win at the European Championship in 2013. His 2012 performances in all-around, floor, pommels, and high bar are Israel’s best Olympic finishes in these events.

Ministers in Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s government clashed over the weekend over bills that would prevent former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu from forming a government.

Justice Minister Gideon Sa’ar (New Hope) told the Yediot Aharonot newspaper on Friday that in the Knesset’s winter session, he would pass bills preventing a candidate under criminal indictment from forming a government and limiting a prime minister to eight years or two terms in office.

“We have already seen that when the country is run by a prime minister under indictment, personal interests are preferred,” said Sa’ar, who added that if passed, the bills would take effect after the next election.

Sa’ar told the newspaper that he was advancing the bills with Bennett’s support. But Bennett’s No. 2 in Yamina, Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked, told Sa’ar on Friday that she opposed the bills.

“There are parties in the coalition that wanted to put anti-Netanyahu bills in the coalition agreement. I didn’t let it happen and my view has not changed,” Shaked told Channel 12 on Saturday night.

Labor leader and Transportation Minister Merav Michaeli said last month that she opposes legislation aimed at one person, even if it is Netanyahu.

“I would rather stop thinking about Netanyahu and focus on helping the citizens of this country,” she said when asked by The Jerusalem Post about such bills at a Labor faction meeting.

Sa’ar told the Post ahead of the March election that bills limiting Netanyahu could not be applied retroactively to that election but he would consider passing it for the next one.

“You can’t change the rules in the middle of the game,” he said.

Likud officials accused Sa’ar of acting out of revenge against Netanyahu and trying to save himself politically. Polls have found that if another election were held, Sa’ar’s New Hope would not cross the electoral threshold.

Likud’s MK Galit Distal Atbaryan scorned Sa’ar on Twitter.

“Sa’ar is afraid, and with good reason,” she said. “He knows fully well that the support for him and his artificial party is close to zero, despite the pampering media coverage. That’s why he’s trying to lower the electoral threshold. That’s why he’s cooking up a personal, anti-democratic bill. That’s why he’ll continue forever fearfully serving the legal system and never the public.”

Shaked issued a threat to the government in a weekend interview with the Makor Rishon newspaper. “If the government does something ideological that I would see as harsh, we won’t be part of it,” she said. “For instance, if the American administration demanded a freeze in Judea and Samaria, there would not be a government.”

A man was shot by Jordanian Army forces while attempting to cross the border into Israel near Kibbutz Maoz Haim on Saturday, N12 reported.

During the incident, three men reportedly tried to cross the border into Israel, after which they were spotted by Jordanian forces, who began firing towards them.

Two of the men returned back to Jordanian territory after the first shots were fired, while the third continued to approach the border and was killed by gunfire from Jordanian forces.

A spokesperson for the IDF said that "the entire incident occured on the Jordanian side [of the border] with no involvement from the IDF."

The IDF added that the incident was "likely not an attempt to penetrate Israeli territory."

The Jordanian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that all those who crossed the border into Israel were foreign citizens, N12 reported.

The incident follows an earlier event that occurred on Friday night, during which the IDF arrested five men suspected of crossing the border from Jordan to Israel, according to the IDF Spokesperson's Unit.

The suspects were stopped near the Dead Sea Factories. They were unarmed and interrogated at the scene.
