Venerable Master Miao Tsan, the abbot (大寺院男住持) of Vairocana Zen Monastery in Garden Grove, California, has conducted hundreds of meditation courses as well as several Zen-Seven and Zen-Three retreats in the United States, Mexico, and Taiwan. He lectures extensively and has given meditation courses and interviews at the University of Texas, the Texas Medical Center, Purdue University, and the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. He has a large of devoted followers in both Asia and West. In Just Use This Mind, he shares the essence of the collected wisdom of Zen masters reaching back to the original Buddha. Once we embark on Zen paths, we have found the Way to live our life of joy, no matter what our circumstances currently are.
Zen training brings us back home to a place of deeper meanings. In this eternal home, mind and matter are one. Here is a spiritual home that isn’t about temples or traditions. It’s a place in our own pure mind where we become the masters of our own thoughts. When we learn to follow the paths of Zen with diligence and right understanding, we can break through old patterns in our life, and become enlightened at peace in our body, our mind and our spirit. Once we have a clear understanding of the Zen paths, all we have to do is begin following it. As we devote ourselves to our practice, we’ll feel our old burdens and old negative attachments fall away. And when we awaken to the Way, we’ll understand that nothing surpasses (超過) the mind. The mind is all existence; it is the entire universe. Nothing happens outside the mind, and outside of what happens there is no mind.
大乘經說,「心外無法,法外無心」,一切法都是自己的妄心在變化的。整個宇宙人生、十法界,都是我們「真如本性」的幻相,是我們自己心裡變現出來的,這是心裡不清淨的世界,沒離開自性。佛法徹始徹終就是在講自己,沒有講到外人。求佛、學佛是什麼,簡單一句話,就是要恢復我們自己的本能、本性。大乘佛法所講的,絕對沒有外面的事物與東西。經上常說的,「心外無法,法外無心」,只要我們見到自己的心與心性,萬事萬物,就都完全通達明瞭,一點障礙也沒有了。現在人學佛,最大的障礙,就是懷疑,不相信佛經上所講的,佛性是我們自己本來就有的。修學佛法,最基本的一個條件,就是信,所以「信為道元功德母」。信,不是要信別人,而是要信自己,要信自己本來就是佛,信自己的自性,本來就有跟如來一樣的智慧德相,一絲毫都不遜色。諸佛如來所有的,我們統統都有,阿彌陀佛所有的,我們樣樣也有,絕不比他少一樣。
「菩提自性,本來清淨,但用此心,直了成佛。」人有本覺,此即是成佛的正因。諸佛與眾生共有的覺性,是本來就具足的,並不需要靠修行,而後才能成就。「清淨」是指身口意三業無「垢染、執著、過失、煩惱。」換言之,凡聖一如,「一切眾生,本來是佛。」一切眾生的真如佛性,與十方諸佛,原無二致,但因眾生一念不覺,緣虛妄境相,染著塵垢,於是像烏雲遮蔽了晴空,覺性就遭到蒙蔽,不見自性的本來面目,迷昧了原有的智慧。如此便妄執分別,煩惱無窮,流轉不已。一旦明白本覺的菩提心性,了知練心法要,心、佛、眾生,三無差別,用心反省,如此一悟,才能證得如來智慧德性,成佛可期。「但用此心,直了成佛。」因為「諸法不離自性,三界唯自心造。」所以我們要用心,捨迷而入悟,發掘內在未開發的寶藏。才能當下頓悟,自性是佛。
其次。我們待人處事,一定要用心,真誠地用敏感心,與人「心心相印」,那麼,我們在人世間所有的人際關係,一定都會很好。我們只需要努力,不要太過期待,生活一定會平安自在。因為「無常」是人世間自然的真理,世間的萬物,有生有滅,有聚有散,花開花謝,潮起潮落,人世間的生老病死,任何人都逃不掉。生命的無常,與人事的無常,是千古的定律,我們只要把握光陰,努力精進學習即可。「天有不測風雲,人有旦夕禍福」,誰也不知道下一瞬間,會發生什麼事,所以,身而為人,我們要懂得時時以「無常」來警愓自己,把握當下的這一瞬間,珍惜此刻,努力生活。在思維上,我們也不要有太多二元對立的想法,甚至要超越時空,不要太執著於過去與未來的人事物,把握當下是威力之點,用心地在每一刻的行住坐臥之中,好好的過日子,那麼,我們定能讓自己天天平靜與安康。
