Israel’s consul general in New York, 12 other aides test positive for COVID

Foreign Ministry claims Asaf Zamir still waiting for results, but diplomat’s wife blows lid off story with Instagram post

Israel’s Consul General to New York Asaf Zamir tested positive for the coronavirus on Saturday night, his wife, actress Maya Wertheimer, announced on Instagram.

At least 12 other staffers at the consulate have also tested positive, and others are waiting for their results after coming down with symptoms in recent days, The Times of Israel learned Saturday evening.

Wertheimer wrote her husband is feeling well and has been vaccinated three times. It was not immediately clear whether Zamir had contracted the Omicron strain, which has been ravaging New York in recent days.

A spokesman for the consulate told The Times of Israel on Saturday evening that Zamir was still waiting for his test results. On Sunday morning, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry said the same thing, though Wertheimer’s post had already been up for several hours.

Staff at the consulate learned about Zamir’s results from Wertheimer’s Instagram post, ToI was told.

On Sunday evening Israel time, the consulate’s spokesman published an official statement confirming the “minor outbreak.”

“All of the personnel who have tested positive are experiencing non-serious symptoms and are in good condition, including Ambassador Zamir,” said spokesman Itay Milner. Out of an abundance of caution, the consulate will be moving to a new schedule this week where employees work partially from home. The consulate extends its thanks to all those who have wished our staff a speedy recovery, and we wish all of our American friends a very happy holiday season.”

Zamir returned last Sunday from the Israeli American Council’s national summit in Florida — the largest Jewish gathering in the US since the start of the pandemic. Over 3,000 people attended sessions that were held largely indoors, though one had to present a negative PCR test in order to attend. Israeli journalist Hila Korach and actor-comedian Eyal Kitzis also tested positive since returning from the IAC conference.

New York state announced Friday that just over 21,000 people had tested positive for COVID the previous day, the highest single-day total for new cases since testing became widely available.

One-day snapshots of virus statistics can be an unreliable way to measure trends, but the new record punctuated a steady increase that started in the western part of the state in late October, and has taken off in New York City in the past week as the Omicron variant spreads.

Just under half of the positive results were in the city, where lines were growing at testing stations and some Broadway shows and the Rockettes Christmas show were canceling performances because of outbreaks among cast members.

Statewide, New York averaged 13,257 positive tests per day over the seven-day period that ended Thursday. That is up 71% from two weeks ago.

The state’s previous one-day high for positive tests came on January 14, 2021, when just under 20,000 people tested positive.

US, Canada, Germany, Italy among 10 countries Israel set to add to no-fly list

Ministers expected to endorse Health Ministry recommendation later Sunday, with countries to be designated ‘red’ starting Wednesday

The Health Ministry on Sunday recommended that the government add 10 new countries to the list of destinations designated “red” due to high COVID-19 infections rates, as Israel braces for a wave of new cases driven by the Omicron variant.

Ministers were expected to approve the recommendation to bar travel to the United States, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Hungary, Canada, Morocco, Portugal, Switzerland and Turkey from Wednesday, December 22, in a meeting of the coronavirus cabinet later Sunday.

The decision is driven by data seen by Prime Minister Naftali Bennett showing the likelihood of “a significant outbreak” of COVID-19 within three weeks, with the peak surpassing that of the Delta wave, which started in June.

Officials have said Bennett is “looking to buy time” to possibly delay the wave of infections by “closing the skies” to destinations popular with Israelis.

Israel has in recent days already added nine countries to the “red,” no-fly list: the UK, Denmark, France, Spain, the United Arab Emirates, Ireland, Norway, Finland, and Sweden. South Africa and a slew of other African countries were added at the start of the month.

Those wanting to travel to “red” countries need to first obtain special permission from a government committee.

Israelis who return from those countries are required to enter quarantine in state-run hotels until their first COVID test comes back negative, after which they can leave, but must remain in home quarantine for seven days, even if they are fully vaccinated.

Defense Minister Benny Gantz on Sunday approved the opening of another two “coronavirus hotels,” including one to quarantine travelers arriving at Ben Gurion Airport, according to his office. Three such state-run facilities, which are run by the Home Front Command, were already operating.

Gantz also ordered ministry officials “to prepare for the opening of additional hotels as needed,” a statement from his office said.

On Thursday, the cabinet voted to extend the current travel restrictions, including the ban on foreigners entering the country and a requirement for all returning Israelis to quarantine for three days upon entry. The limitations will now last until December 29 at least.

Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz said Sunday that the restrictions were needed to “buy time” for the vaccination campaign.

“We are facing a new situation. Most of the infection from Omicron is coming from abroad, so we must limit the rate of entry of the virus into Israel in order to buy time and vaccinate as much as possible before the spread also occurs in Israel,” Horowitz told Army Radio.

But in a statement released after Sunday morning’s cabinet meeting, in which expanding the no-fly list was discussed, Transportation Minister Merav Michaeli said she told ministers that she would not back any further restrictions on travel “until the issue of support for airline companies is resolved.”

She said the government was “abandoning thousands of workers for whom this is their livelihood. There is currently no unpaid leave agreement or anything else that supports them. These people perform critical work and the State of Israel must protect the service offered by the airlines.”

“We have already heard that British Airways has canceled its flights to Israel as of tomorrow. If not the Israeli airlines, who will fly Israelis who are currently overseas back home? I demand that support for the airlines be agreed on this week,” Michaeli said.

Bennett has come under criticism in recent weeks for the policy steps he has taken; however, according to the Haaretz daily, the premier believes he has bought the time needed to slow the entry of the highly contagious variant into the country, giving scientists a window to study it as well as buying time for the vaccination and booster campaign.

At the cabinet meeting, Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked warned that “within four weeks, we’ll be at tens of thousands of confirmed [COVID] cases and thousands of shuttered school classes,” Channel 12 reported.

The network said Science Minister Orit Farkash-Hacohen concurred that Israel would experience a significant infection wave in the coming weeks, encouraging vaccination by enforcing the Green Pass at all non-essential stores and decreeing that coronavirus tests for anyone over age five who is not vaccinated must be paid for out of pocket.

The Health Ministry said Sunday that 372 new COVID-19 infections were diagnosed on Saturday, a low number reflecting reduced testing over the weekend. Some 838 new COVID-19 cases were diagnosed Thursday, 45 of which had been confirmed to be of the Omicron variant, bringing the total number of Omicron cases in Israel to over 130.

Most of the cases were found in people returning from overseas. The ministry did not provide a breakdown of the latest figures.

According to the ministry, there were 81 COVID-19 patients in serious condition and 41 on ventilators Sunday. Most patients in serious condition are over 60 and unvaccinated.

Since the start of the pandemic, 5.8 million Israelis have received two vaccine doses, and over 4.1 million have gotten a third, booster shot.

The death toll in Israel since the start of the pandemic stood at 8,232 on Sunday.

Azerbaijan handed over 10 captured Armenian soldiers to Armenia on Sunday for the second time this month following talks last week between both sides and European Council President Charles Michel, the two countries said.

Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed to a ceasefire at their border on Nov. 16 after Russia urged them to step back from confrontation following the deadliest clash since a war last year.

Armenia had asked Russia to help defend itself after the worst fighting since a 44-day war last year between ethnic Armenian forces and the Azeri army over the Nagorno-Karabakh enclave that killed at least 6,500 people.

In a statement, Azerbaijan's State Security Service said it had handed over 10 Armenian soldiers who were detained on Nov. 16. It also released 10 soldiers earlier in December. On that occasion, Russia played the mediation role.

Armenia's Armenpress media outlet published the names of the second group of 10 prisoners of war handed over, citing Vahan Hunanyan, the Armenian foreign ministry's press secretary.

Despite tradition, more Orthodox Jewish women are getting ordained

Women attempting to become rabbis or spiritual leaders face an uphill battle; in US, around half a dozen ordained women serve in Modern Orthodox synagogues

By ILAN BEN ZION and YONAT SHIMRONToday, 3:30 am

AP/Religion News Service — At the South Philadelphia Shtiebel, a 5-foot-tall partition, called a “mechitza,” separates the men from the women in accordance with ancient tradition.

But when it comes time for the sermon, Rabbanit Dasi Fruchter, the Modern Orthodox congregation’s leader, steps up to the podium, a juxtaposition that confuses many looking in from the outside.

“People walk into the space saying, ‘What? I don’t get it,’” said Fruchter. “It’s hard to get. Everything feels in between.”

Fruchter is one of half a dozen or so ordained women who serve Modern Orthodox synagogues across the United States and one of even fewer who serve as top spiritual leaders. While the larger Reform and Conservative Jewish movements have ordained women rabbis for decades, the Orthodox fold has only recently begun tapping women to leadership roles.

Modern Orthodoxy, which aims to hold onto Jewish tradition while engaging with the outside world, is leading the way. But as the seating arrangement in South Philadelphia demonstrates, the changes are halting and somewhat uneven.

The divided seating harks back to the Jerusalem Temple, when only men — and then only priests — were allowed near the inner sanctum. That practice has been even harder to recast than male rabbinic leadership, which came later in Jewish history and is less defined in halacha, or Jewish religious law.

Fruchter, who is 31 and not married, was earning a graduate degree in nonprofit management and Jewish studies at New York University when she heard about Yeshivat Maharat, in the Bronx, the only US seminary that ordains Orthodox Jewish women. Ordained in 2016, she immediately landed a job as an assistant rabbanit at an Orthodox congregation in Potomac, Maryland. (Many ordained Orthodox women do not use the word “rabbi,” preferring the Hebrew feminine “rabbanit.”)

In 2018, Fruchter was approached by a group of foundations interested in creating more leadership positions for Orthodox women. After months scouting potential locations, she settled on South Philadelphia, where the Jewish community has thinned out in recent decades as people migrated to the suburbs. The congregation she dubbed the Shtiebel (the word comes from the Yiddish for a small, homey house of worship), was launched in July 2019, with a Friday night service attended by 75 people in a rented space.

Yeshivat Maharat has ordained 50 Orthodox women since it opened in 2009, and has an enrollment of 46 in its three ordination tracks, said Rabba Sara Hurwitz, the school’s co-founder, president, and the first Modern Orthodox woman rabbi ordained in the US, in 2009.

In Israel, where Orthodoxy is the only branch of Judaism recognized by the state, a handful of seminaries ordain women and a growing number of academies train women in Jewish law. Orthodox women now serve as school principals, community educators and legal authorities.

A rare few, such as Rabbanit Shira Marili-Mirvis, have become leaders at more progressive Orthodox synagogues.

“I never had a dream when I was a girl of being a rabbanit,” said Marili-Mirvis at her home in the West Bank settlement of Efrat, her hair covered in line with Orthodox custom for married women. “It wasn’t an option. It wasn’t something I saw around me.”

Attending seminary after high school, she developed a passion for studying the intricacies of halacha. She eventually enrolled at Ohr Torah Stone, a Jerusalem seminary that teaches Talmud to women with the aim of preparing them to become community leaders.

Several years ago, she moved to Efrat, an Israeli settlement south of Jerusalem in the West Bank. Home to a large community of American Jewish immigrants, Efrat has become a focal point for Modern Orthodoxy.

Marili-Mirvis said her decision to move to Efrat was “not a declaration of political or ideological intentions,” rather, it stemmed from practical considerations and a desire to be part of an observant community that would be open to a rabbanit.

Her newly fledged congregation, Shirat HaTamar, comprises about 45 families from various Jewish ethnic traditions: Ashkenazi Jews as well as Jews of Tunisian, Yemenite, and Moroccan origin. One of its aims is “to include women as much as possible within the guidelines of halacha,” she said.

While she delivers sermons and provides halachic guidance to her congregants, Marili-Mirvis isn’t permitted to lead prayers or read from the Torah on the sabbath.

“There are many limitations, but I have to say that I accept it and I accept it with love,” she said. “I understand that when I choose a life that is obligated to halacha, there will be parts that halacha doesn’t see me exactly equal.”

Marili-Mirvis said she has received “very warm responses” since the congregation made her appointment as its rabbanit official earlier this year, but the state of Israel, whose religious matters are often determined by conservative ultra-Orthodox authorities, has not recognized her position. Women are not even allowed to take the exam that qualify rabbis as experts in halacha and entitle their congregations to state funding.

In the US as well, the Rabbinical Council of America or the Orthodox Union, the leading organizations for Orthodox Jews, oppose women’s ordination.

But neither has the Orthodox Union, which has some 400, mostly Modern Orthodox, affiliating congregations, taken the step of expelling congregations that have hired an ordained woman.

“What we’re seeing happening now in the Orthodox community is that people are beginning to imagine that there is no halachic barrier to women serving as rabbis and remaining fully committed to Orthodoxy,” said Brad Hirschfield an Orthodox rabbi who is president of the National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership. “That’s not yet across the board, by any means. It might take a generation or two, but it will become normative to have Orthodox women rabbis.”

Hirschfield thinks even the most strictly observant Orthodox, or Haredi, Jews, will eventually accept ordained women.

The wives of Haredi rabbis are already staking out more professional roles for themselves and taking advantage of advanced training, said Michal Raucher, assistant professor of Jewish studies at Rutgers University.

For now, most of the 50 women ordained through Yeshivat Maharat serve not as rabbis but as educators or in other professional synagogue roles.

“I don’t think the goal or project of Maharat was to place a woman in every Modern Orthodox synagogue,” said Hurwitz. “But I do think the Orthodox communities that are looking are realizing that women have a lot to offer.”

In the meantime, synagogues like the South Philadelphia Shtiebel are chartering a new course. Fruchter said she trains girls for the bat mitzvah coming-of-age ceremony and must also explain why — at least for now — women may not be able to publicly read from the Torah during a Shabbat morning service.

“Orthodox women’s leadership is navigating what it is,” said Fruchter of South Philadelphia Shtiebel. “We have halachic pieces we have to address, communal pieces we have to address. Ultimately we’ll lead with kindness, creativity and relevance and see what emerges.”
