(精神) Spirituality vs. (物質) Materialism
豐子愷(中國畫家、作家)曾說:「人生可以看作三層樓。一層是物質生活,二層是精神生活,三層是靈魂生活。」人生三層樓,三重境界,由低到高,逐步靠近心靈。1. 物質生活:好的生活,必須要談錢。生活中的許多基本需求,都需要通過金錢來交換,也因為只有滿足最基本的生存需求,我們才能去追求更加精彩的生活,於是,為了獲得金錢而努力工作,被賦予非凡意義。錢不是萬能,但沒有錢,真是萬萬不能。生活的底氣是錢給的。它讓我們在往後的生活裡,不必為柴米油鹽發愁。有錢可以說走就走,沒錢連辭職的勇氣都沒有。我們不得不承認,錢可以帶來我們想要的安全感。我們終其一生,如此拼命努力,不是因為愛錢,而是不想為錢跟人低聲下氣。當父母年老時,我們有能力可以分擔,在孩子需要時,我們不會囊中羞澀,生活遭遇變故時,我們不會狼狽不堪。努力賺錢,不是為了改變世界,而是為了讓自己有足夠的能力,去應對生活的意外和變化。英國小說家毛姆說:「人追求的,當然不是財富,但必須要有足以維持尊嚴的生活,使自己可以不受阻撓,能夠慷慨,能夠獨立。」人需要掙錢,是為了具備一種能力,讓自己有一天能站在生活的高處,在數量衆多的生活方式中,選出最適合自己靈魂的那種生活方式。對生活的追求,我們都是循序漸進的,先滿足物質,再追求精神、靈魂上的滿足。
2. 精神生活:平淡的生活裡,藏著豐盈富足的精神寄託。我們如何才能擁有豐富而自由的精神世界?最有效的方法是:少關注物慾聲色,多接受藝術、文化和詩意的薰陶。我們可以多讀書,可以去旅行。走過的旅途,遇過的人文,看過的風景,都會讓我們的思維更開闊,性格更豁達,心靈更平靜。認真生活的人,不需要多費力,就能在平淡的生活裡,找到精神的寄託。一雙美的眼睛,就能讓生活變得多彩多姿、豐盈富足。看看大自然的花草,夏采芙蓉,秋藏菊花,一年四季,花香沁鼻。太陽東昇,夕陽西下,追求精神豐盈,就是會欣賞大地萬物,擁有一份在生活之外的心境,做想做的事,平靜、恬淡。人生最幸福的事情,莫過於找到身與心的棲息之地,把一切都過成我們想要的樣子。最後,3. 靈魂生活:生活的最終目標,就是要獲得靈魂的自由。為自己而活,帶來的是安定感,正是這種感覺,讓我們得以在平凡生活中,獲得對生命的激情。我們要確認自己的存在,認清自己要走的方向,找到自己的人生價值,自由地過自己想要的生活。這與年齡無關,因為,只要靈魂不老,那就永遠年輕。無時無刻,我們就都可以無所畏懼,自在、率性、灑脫。夜的孤獨和寧靜,常常是我們撫慰靈魂的最好時機,一首能表達心緒的歌曲,一杯能淡化憂鬱的清茶,一部能讀出生命價值的好書,都是我們和靈魂對話交流的最好方式。關愛內心,就是關愛我們自己的靈魂,內心踏實溫暖,靈魂也就溫暖踏實。每個人的心,都是自己靈魂的家。每個人的靈魂,都住在自己的心裡。有靈魂陪伴的人,是安詳的,不滯於物,不困於心,不亂於人,不失本心。真正的幸福與快樂,是靈性的驅動。最盛大的富有,是內心豐盈,擁有靈魂的歸屬感。精神世界的投入和探索,超越一切的滿足和狂喜。我們要用「創造」、「學習」和「體驗」的心,找回靈魂的生命力。
於是,我們每個人都可以根據自己的天性,加上後天環境的選擇,在純粹精神與純粹物質的兩個極端之間,找到自己幸福感的最大點,追求自己最想要的生活。無論自己未來想要成為哪一種人,跟隨自己的內心去做,絕不會錯,因為,自己的內心,才是最真實的精神食糧,才是我們永遠的靈魂所在。
There are two basic approaches to life: The spiritual one and the materialistic one. Both are well known and historically important. Since the earliest times, people have tested both in order to search for their value and importance in securing their lives and minimizing their suffering. Both approaches are meant to shield us from the worries and anxieties of life created by the impermanence and uncertainty, and to ensure our happiness, peace and wellbeing. There are the fundamental differences between the materialists who believe in the attainment of happiness through the gratification of the senses and the fulfillment of desires, and the spiritual seekers who believe in attaining peace through renunciation of senses, choice, control, attachment, and desires unconditionally. A materialist wants to change the present for a better future. He wants to deal with the unpleasantness of his life with an intelligent and self-willed effort. He strives hard to secure happiness, by creating conditions and environment which have proven to be effective compared to the past. He goes by his experiences and relies upon his strengths and abilities to make himself immune to the uncertainties of life. Somehow, we all educate ourselves that we want money, a house, a family and children. We want all these things because we have a hope that someday they would bring joy to us. But now, we might be piled up with too many things, and joy is the only thing that has been forgotten. On the contrary, a spiritual person makes peace with the present, and learns to live in the present. He clearly knows the consequences of choosing and controlling his life. He accepts the unpleasantness of his life as an opportunity to learn about himself and expand his awareness. He embraces the simplicity of life without choice, desire and attachment. He opens himself to life, and for him, true control is having control upon himself, his actions and reactions. Spirituality means to know, “I am the source of my joy.”
So, “what is the difference between a spiritual and a materialistic person?” A materialistic person earns only his food. As for joy, peace, and love, he has to beg. A spiritual person earns everything himself, including his love, his peace and his joy. He begs only for his food, and if he wants, he can earn that, too. A spiritual person sees that a divine consciousness creates the world, while the materialist feels that matter is the fundamental reality. Both of them produce completely different relationships with the world. The first cherishes everything as being alive, aware, and ultimately a divine expression of the infinite. The other treats the world as inactive, dead, and separate from his own self. A materialist seeks to understand life from the outside, searching for a mechanism by which matters are essential. He doesn’t feel a deep and universal connection with the world. The result is violence to the earth, exploitation of life forms, and a disregard for the needs of others. He sees how animals are unequal to humans, how this person is different from him, and how another culture or race is unlike his. He thus thinks, “Only I and my needs are truly important.”
However, the spiritual person realizes that the primal cause of this world is consciousness, and that the entire universe is simply an extension of the Creator.
When God’s consciousness vibrates at the right frequency, it might fool our senses into thinking that this world is solid. It’s not solid at all, but our eyes, ears, and other senses are tuned to perceive it that way. The spiritual person knows that nothing is really separate from anything else. Everything is inter-connected because it all springs from the same consciousness. Seeing other people, plants, animals and everything as interconnected produces a life very different from the one based upon the separation and conflict in the materialism.
The universe does reflect our attitudes back to us. If we see everything as being part of our own greater reality, the universe will respond to us with harmony and kindness. The world will become our friend. And if we live this way, as if everything were living and conscious, then the world will come alive for us. In this sense, we could appreciate the world around us, and behave toward it as if it were alive. We then gradually see the inner light at our spiritual eyes. In deep stillness, we might see that our ego is only a bubble on the bosom of the infinite sea. Eventually, we could shift our sense of identity from the ego, which perceives itself as separate, to the soul, which sees only unity. We, then, begin to live differently and live in a bubble of joy and harmony.
