Welcome to Clairstone! In this episode, you will learn how to use the English words "resume" and "board".
TRANSCRIPT:
Hello everyone, my name is Shivika, and you are listening to the English ClAIRSTONE Podcast, where you can build the cornerstone of your English vocabulary! For all the new listeners, welcome to the community, and for our regulars, hello again! Before we start, I will remind you that we upload new episodes twice a week and there are transcripts for each podcast episode in English, Arabic, and Spanish at our website projectclair.org, so go check that out if you want to follow along!

Today, we will be going over the words ‘resume’ or ‘resume’ and ‘board’

The first word resume is spelled as R-E-S-U-M-E. This word can be used as a noun and as a verb, even though in verb form it can take different forms dependent on the tense of the sentence. Resume can mean to start to do something again after taking a break or pausing on doing it. For example, if I am studying from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm but then take a break to eat food I would ‘resume’ studying at 4:00 pm. An example of a sentence can be “Trisha was able to resume planning a vacation after she figured out how to pay for it.” In this sentence resume is informing the reader of the sentence that she had to take a break from doing what she was and then the reason is given later on for the interruption. Resume can mean a summary when used in the noun form. However, it is pronounced differently. It is said as “resume.” Such as saying that David was given a resume of how things worked at the office. Resume can also mean a compiled list of accomplishments and experience that employers can look at to judge a candidate’s capability for the job. It is something that can contain a person’s education, previous jobs, volunteer work, and any awards or honors received. An example as a sentence can be, “Dave compiled his resume three days before his job interview.” In this sentence, resume is the list of accomplishments that could increase the chance of him getting a job.

The next word board is spelled as B-O-A-R-D. Board is used as a noun and a verb. One definition of board is a flat, mostly polished piece of wood. It can be wooden boards that are used in floors, wooden boards that are painted differently for different board games, a wooden board to paint on and make art out of, or a wooden board that is like a tabletop to keep things on top of. An example of a sentence could be, “Aisha used a darker colored board in her floors to compliment the colors of the walls of her house.” Another example could be “Nate painted his board abstractly with the colors of the rainbow. Board can also mean a group of people that are the decision making body of an organization called the board of directors and more. It is basically the highest ranking people in an organization that make decisions as to how the organization runs. An example of a sentence could be, “Paul was on the board of directors for the real estate company called Monsters Inc.” As a verb, board can mean to get into or on a vehicle of some sort like a train or an airplane. For example, “Twain boarded his flight from seattle to Phoenix.” or “The hoarding time for Train B is 5:00 am.”
