Fight for peace is not a slogan, but an action from the people all around the world. Do we really learn from the history? What do we really understand our past? Does our past provide lessons for the present, guidance for the future? J. Pekka Mäkelä has the thought that he wants to leave all these for his readers to explore their answers on their own. To continue his mother a journalist Riitta Mäkelä’s project of writing the book about China, J. Pekka Mäkelä didn’t think about that he will step into the water where he was not familiar with. But the arch of the stories has been inviting him to deliver the message to the people. The novel ‘Hunan’ published 2018, is based on his godmother and great aunt Helvi Söderman’s dairy from 1935 to 1946 during her Christian mission in Hunan region, China. The novel ‘Hunan’ was nominated on year 2018‘s Finlandia literature prize. According to the Panel, the book ‘Hunan’ is raising the dialogues between cultures and religions, in which people are finding their principles and justifications to live on.. In this interview, J. Pekka Mäkelä will tell us how he managed to put on the reality and the fiction in the work of history and what he wants the readers to learn from the past.
