所謂心理剖繪技術（psychological profiling），乃是將犯罪心理學與司法精神醫學對犯罪者的系統研究，予以整理、比較、分析、歸納、分類並標準化各種罪犯的類型，而能提供實務人員在偵辦刑案時，除借重傳統之物理與化學痕跡的搜集與鑑識外，更能搜集到犯罪者與被害者，和犯罪情境互動後所留存下的「心理痕跡」，而以此心理痕跡過濾人犯，縮小偵查範圍而提高破案比率的刑事偵查技術。
