Garbage and Rubbish, America and England

English has many different synonyms for household waste. This is one of those cases where the following words all mean the same thing: rubbish, garbage, trash, litter, and refuse. It seems English speakers simply have a fondness for waste so they want to use lots of different words to talk about it. You can remember that Americans call their waste garbage or trash, Brits use the terms rubbish or litter, and refuse is a formal way of saying the same thing.
