the Q&A
No PROBLEM
So Sophie, could you tell us something about Dave?
He’s a very hardworking fifth grader, but he likes to talk A Lot. And he is the leader of the fifth grade boys at his school.
What class project is Dave working on?
He’s working on a book report on India and Gandhi.
Who is Gandhi?
The father of modern India
Why is Dave amazed by Gandhi?
Because this skinny little man practically pushed the whole British army out of India all by himself.
What’s Dave inspired to do after he read about Gandhi’s life?
He’s inspired to not talk for a day.
And why is that?
Because Gandhi believed not talking was a way to bring order to his mind.
What happens to Dave when he gets to school that day?
He gets into a big argument with Lynsey.
And who is Lynsey?
She’s Dave’s classmate, and his arch-nemesis.
What’s Lynsey like?
She’s also a loudmouth and like Dave, she’s the leader of girls in the fifth grade.
And what’s the argument between Dave and Lynsey about?
Dave says that boys never talk as much as girls do, and Lynsey strongly disagrees. Then they decide to have a contest.
What contest do they have?
A contest to see which side talks less.
What are the rules of the contest?
If they have to answer to adults, they can only use maximum of three words. And they cannot talk at home or on the school bus either. The contest will last two days. The group that talks less will win.
Why do the fifth graders of this school have the nickname of unshushable?
Because they just talk and talk and talk.
Who is Mrs. Hiatt?
She’s the principal of the school.
What kind of principal is she?
She’s very strict. And she is trying to shush the fifth graders. She will bring a bullhorn to the cafeteria to tell the fifth graders to be quiet.
What surprise does she encounter that day when she gets to the cafeteria that day with her bullhorn?
There’s no talking at all. It seems like aliens have passed these fifth graders and zapped their mouths.
How does the principal feel now that the unshushable are so quiet? Is she happy?
No, in fact Mrs Hiatt feels nervous and scared because she doesn’t know what happened.
Thanks for helping out with this Q&A, Sophie.
