I was planting more than 5 mu (3,333 square meters) of strawberries at the beginning. But now, the entire area covers more than 80 mu (53,333 square meters).

我一开始出来的时候，就种了5亩地的草莓。然后现在总面积大概在80多亩。

In 2017, our annual production was some 5,000 kilograms. But in 2022, our annual production is estimated to have reached more than 100,000 kilograms, with total sales topping 4 million yuan.

2017年我们整个产量就1万来斤，我们今年（2022年）的产量大概在20多万斤。预计今年的销售额大概在400多万元。

But to make that impressive growth come true was anything but an easy task, especially for 36-year-old Sheng Cheng, who started growing fruit back in his hometown in Shanghai's Jinshan District in 2009, right after getting his bachelor's degree -- in computer science. That may seem to have no connection to agriculture, but seeing the tough competition in the digital fields, Sheng took a brave step. That turned out to root the seed of his dreams, and it has turned out to be very much the right pick.

实现如此显著的增长并不容易，特别是对于36岁的盛成来说，盛成2009年开始回到家乡上海金山务农，当时他刚刚拿到计算机科学的大学文凭。他的教育背景和农业看起来毫无关联，但在看到了数字化领域激烈的竞争之后，盛成迈出了勇敢的一步。而这样的转变现在看来是一个正确的选择。

In 2009 when I graduated, I took a community-level post in agriculture, working for two years at a grape cooperative. I saw that those farmers and owners made a lot of money, and I became interested in the business. So in 2011, I set up my own cooperative, growing strawberries. At the beginning I didn't have much money so I couldn't hire other workers and had to do everything myself. Things started to turn better in 2014, when I got more sales channels.

09年毕业以后做“三支一扶”，大概做了两年，两年我是在一个我们的葡萄合作社，也是看到了那些农民和老板挣到钱了，对农业方面，也感觉自己也有点兴趣，在2011年的时候，自己是成立了合作社，当时是决定种草莓。前几年刚做的时候没钱，工人叫不到，都是自己干的。大概是在2014、2015年的时候，稍微情况改善了，后来销路那块能打开了。

I've been to strawberry farms before, full of plants all growing entirely on the ground. But this one is very different, more like a laboratory. Everything is managed in great detail by a smart system which was installed just last year.

我以前也去过草莓园，那里的草莓都匍匐长在地上，但这里看起来非常的不一样，更像是一个实验室。这里去年安装了智能系统，而这个系统正在管理着草莓园里的每一个细节。

I introduced high-tech equipment - temperature control, and sensors to control the humidity and watering. This greenhouse covers around 5mu (3,333 square meters). The intelligent system helps me save at least half of the labor, and if it turns out to be helpful, we can implement this model on more strawberry farms.

引进了这些高科技的设备，温控、适度、传感，还有那个雾化里面的。这个棚大概在5亩地左右，至少得减少了一半的人工，如果做得好，其他的草莓种植户也能把这个模式给复制下去。

Part of his success today he also attributes to realizing he should care about other farmers in his hometown. And that's what triggered him to grow the e-commerce business 3 years ago.

回顾现在的成绩，盛成感叹这要归功于他当时决定要帮助家乡的其他农民。正是这个念头促使他四年前开始发展电子商务。

I also met with many cooperative owners who had the same ideas I did. So now our e-commerce platform combines all the high-quality agricultural products in Jinshan District. The mini program takes care of selling our agricultural products throughout the whole year, instead of just selling my strawberries.

在我们农业的这个圈子里，碰到了很多志同道合的合作社的农场主，整合我们金山区所有的其他的优质的农产品，全部在我们的电商平台上面销售。一年都在销售我们金山农产品，而不是只单一地销售我们的草莓。

And that is now paying everyone back.

现在看来，当时的努力都得到了回报。

At the beginning, when we were just selling strawberries, I just had my original clients. But then, when we expanded the categories, for example, grape and watermelon buyers would go to our mini program and buy other stuff, and vice versa. We have formed a sales ecosystem, and everyone is sharing in the fruits of it. Farmers are making 20 or 30% more money.

一开始我们光做草莓，也就是我们自己原来的一些客户。然后后来我们就是做整个金山的农产品，等于是葡萄的客户，西瓜的客户，都能引流到我们这个小程序上面，买草莓的也有可能去买西瓜了。实际上等于一个销售的供应链或者生态链，大家都共享起来了。我们给农户实际上致富增收，在原来的基础上做了一个加法，然后这个加法大概在20%-30%左右。

Xu expects that the peak harvest for his oranges should be reached around 2025, when annual production should reach 400,000 kilograms, four times the volume now. So the cooperative sales model has come at just the right time for the 4,000 farmers given special training by the district authority.

徐俊雄预计橘子丰收的高峰应该在2025年，届时年产量将到达40万公斤，也就是现在的四倍。区政府组织培训的合作社模式为4000多个农民带来了福利。

The biggest challenge for cooperatives remains the sales. They have got good command of the growing techniques, but sales rely on a brand, which would be difficult for each individual cooperative. So we've brought everyone together. The strawberry consortium has been operating for 3 years now, and while it posted some losses at the early stage, so far the farm owners are very confident about it.

合作社现在最大的困难还是销售问题，就是因为现在种的话，这些技术他们都已经掌握得非常好了，销售呢就还是要以品牌为主。所以你单家独户地做品牌非常难，所以我们就是让他们组织起来，就像我们这个草莓联合体，整个现在运营已经第三年了，前期有的还就是亏掉的，但是到目前为止他们都信心非常足。

I've been doing agriculture business for almost 13 years now, and I feel I'm rooted here. I will continue working on e-commerce and digitalization, and I hope more young people can join us.

农业上面已经做了将近13年了，那么也是对这个农业方面已经是生根了，后面就是在电商、数字化这块继续要做下去，也是希望能有更多的年轻人来参与到农业。

From mid-December to the end of the month, our sales grew 3 or 4 times from a year ago. And we expect that since the COVID restrictions have been lifted, in 2023 our sales will get even better.

2022年12月中旬到月底的销售额，比前面要增长了三四倍，我们整个疫情过了以后，我们期望是在2023年整个的销售情况、形势各方面都会好很多。
