1.CONSTRUCTION STARTS ON480-METER SKYSCRAPER

北外滩开发建设全面起势！480米浦西第一高楼正式开工

Construction started today on 9 projects in Hongkou District. One of them is a 480-meter skyscraper【摩天大楼】, which will be the tallest building in Puxi upon completion. Zhang Hong tells us more.

今天（03/24），9个项目在虹口区集中开工，其中91号地块（上海北外滩中心）规划建筑高度480米，建成后将为浦西第一高楼。记者张泓带来更多报道。

The top of the skyscraper will resemble a budding magnolia flower. The building will include a hotel, offices and commercial space. A rooftop balcony will be open to the public for views of the city. It will have 99 floors and is scheduled for completion in 2030, when it will be the third tallest building in the city after Shanghai Tower at 632 meters and Shanghai World Financial Center, which measures 492 meters.

这幢浦西第一高楼的顶部酷似一朵白玉兰花，将设置酒店、办公区、商业区等多种业态，塔顶观光平台会对市民开放，以欣赏城市景观。建筑共99层，计划于2030年竣工，届时将成为仅次于632米的上海中心大厦和492米的上海环球金融中心的上海第三高楼。

“The building will have features that resemble Shanghai. It will be suitable for business, living and shopping.”

Construction started on 8 other projects today. The 9 projects combine to cover an area of 1.03 million square meters with a total investment of 40.3 billion yuan.

此外，今天（03/24）还有8个项目开工。9个项目总建筑面积103万平方米、总投资403亿元。

“Starting construction on Puxi's new landmark is a symbolic step. It marks the beginning of a new era of development at the North Bund. It will help the region achieve its planned functions.”

Hongkou government officials said 22 major projects are planned this year at the North Bund.

虹口区政府官员表示，今年北外滩区域重大工程共22项。

2.CHINA, NEW ZEALAND TRADE TIES CONTINUE TO EXPAND YEARLY

新西兰外长马胡塔访华，中新贸易关系逐年扩大

New Zealand's Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta is on a 4-day visit to China at the invitation of Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Qin Gang. In the past 5 decades, the trade between China and New Zealand has been growing quickly. Our reporter Zhang Shixuan spoke to one businessman from New Zealand and finds out how he has been contributing to that growth.

应国务委员兼外交部长秦刚邀请，新西兰外长马胡塔正在对中国进行为期4天的访问。50年来，中新贸易发展迅速。记者张诗旋采访了一位来自新西兰的商人，了解他是如何为这一增长做出贡献的。

Having been doing business here on the Chinese mainland for around a decade, this digital marketing and e-commerce agency now serves more than 300 brands, more than 20 of them from New Zealand. Ashwin Pillay, from New Zealand, is one of the co-founders of the Shanghai-headquartered firm.

这家数字营销和电子商务机构在中国大陆开展业务已有十年左右，目前为300多个品牌提供服务，其中20多个品牌来自新西兰。来自新西兰的Ashwin Pillay是这家总部位于上海的公司联合创始人之一。

“We have a very long-standing relationship with New Zealand companies, with the New Zealand government, helping New Zealand exporters to succeed in the China market. One of the challenges that a lot of New Zealand companies face when it comes to China is the unknown. And that's what we help foreign businesses navigate【导航】with, understanding the ecosystem.”

In the past decade, Pillay says, he has seen increasing interest from New Zealand companies in exporting their products and services to China.

“Oftentimes people have this impression that it's only New Zealand fresh produce and FMCG products that are being exported into the China market, which simply is in the case. There are a lot of innovative technologies in terms of block chain, logistics【物流】, sustainability, technologies as well that New Zealand is now exporting to China.”

“China and New Zealand have seen impressive growth in bilateral trade volume. And the cooperation has been ever extendedbeyond just their bilateral relations. In late March 2017, New Zealand became the first Western developed country to sign a cooperation agreement with China on the Belt and Road Initiative.And in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership that took effect last January, New Zealand was counted as one of the 15 member countries.”

“RCEP's for New Zealand's massive. It's expected to increase the GDP by 2 billion dollars. Obviously, with the RCEP, it reduces a lot of the red tape. And we're already starting to see that with a lot of New Zealand organizations, with their interest in coming up into market, meeting with potential partners and distributors, understanding the landscape a little bit more.”

China remains New Zealand's largest trading partner, export market and source of imports. The bilateral trade volume between the 2 countries jumped from 7 million New Zealand dollars 5 decades ago, to 35.5 billion dollars in 2021.

中国仍是新西兰第一大贸易伙伴、第一大出口市场和第一大进口来源国。两国双边贸易额从50年前的700万新西兰元跃升至2021年的355亿美元。

3.TIKTOK CEO TESTIFIES BEFORE U.S. CONGRESS

TikTok CEO出席听证会，回击“涉美国家安全”言论

TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew testified before a U.S. Congressional committee in Washington D.C. yesterday. The hearing came after the Biden Administration indicated it may ban the app in the United States if its Chinese owner ByteDance, refused to sell its stake in TikTok to an American company. Stephen Rancourt has more.

昨天（03/23），TikTok首席执行官周受资前往华盛顿特区的美国众议院能源和商务委员会作证。此次听证会前，拜登表示，如果TikTok的中国所有者字节跳动公司拒绝将其在TikTok的股份出售给美国公司，该应用可能会在美国被禁。记者Stephen ranccourt带来详细报道。

During the five-hour hearing, Chew spent most of his time attempting to push back assertions that TikTok, or its Chinese parent company ByteDance, are tools of the Chinese government, arguing the platform was doing everything to ensure the safety for its 150 million American users.

在5个小时的听证会上，周受资花了大部分时间试图反驳有关TikTok或其中国母公司字节跳动是中国政府工具的说法，辩称该平台正在尽一切努力确保其1.5亿美国用户的安全。

Chew said TikTok had spent more than 1.5 billion U.S. dollars on data security efforts. The data will be housed in a new division called U.S. Data Security, which will be monitored by U.S. tech company Oracle, an effort dubbed "Project Texas."

周受资进一步表示，TikTok已经投入15亿美元在美国推出“得克萨斯计划”，将美国用户的数据存储在一个名为美国数据安全的新部门，并由美国甲骨文公司监控，以满足保护数据安全的要求。

U.S. lawmakers also mentioned the app's impact on children. Chew responded to many pointed questions by saying the issues were complex and not unique to TikTok. When he tried to explain further, he was interrupted several times.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said today that China urges the United States to cease its unreasonable suppression【镇压】 of foreign companies. Mao added China has never and will not ask companies or individuals to collect or provide data located in foreign countries for the Chinese government in a way that violates local laws. So far, the U.S. government has not provided any evidence that TikTok poses a threat to U.S. national security, but it has repeatedly made attempts to suppress the company.

中国外交部发言人毛宁今天（03/24）表示，中方敦促美方停止无理打压别国企业。毛宁补充道，中国从来没有也不会要求企业或个人以违反当地法律的方式为中国政府采集或提供位于外国境内的数据、信息和情报。美国政府迄今没有提供任何证据证明TikTok威胁美国国家安全，却一再对有关企业做“有罪推定”和无理打压。
