1.NEW RICE VARIETIES BRED IN SHANGHAI
口感软糯、香味浓郁！上海培育水稻新品种
New rice varieties have been developed in Shanghai to help ensure food security. The new varieties increase yields【产量】, which means higher incomes for farmers. Zhang Hong tells us more.
为了确保粮食安全，上海已培育出新的水稻品种。这一新品种提高了产量，意味着农民的收入将得以增加。记者张泓带来更多详细报道。
At Nanlu Village in Jinshan, an early maturing and drought-tolerant rice was harvested in mid-August. It allows farmers to plant other crops on the same field two or three times a year. In Nanlu, corn and green vegetables were planted after the rice harvest. The corn can be picked in one month.
在上海金山区南陆村，特早熟节水抗旱稻在8月中旬就已经收割上市。不少农民每年在同一块田地上可以种植其他作物两到三季。在南陆，水稻收割后土地上又种上了玉米和青菜。再过一个月，玉米就可以采收上市了。

It helps increase land use efficiency【效率】and the income of farmers.

Shanghai Agrobiological Gene Center has been working to breed the early maturing rice variety since 2016. Six years later, the center managed to turn a Thai long-grain rice to a round-grain one with a higher temperature tolerance. Yields per 666 square meters exceed 100 kilograms.
从2016年开始，上海农业生物基因中心便一直致力于培育早熟水稻品种。经过六年选育，今年又成功地把长粒形泰国香米类型籼米，改良成传统的圆粒形粳米，耐高温属性更强，亩产可以高出100公斤以上。

We are continuing our studies and breeding【培育】of rice varieties. We’re still working on developing a new generation of the current drought-tolerant variety. In the following five to 10 years, we will be able to plant the rice in northern China, a more arid area. The planting area is expected to reach almost 66,000 square kilometers.
我们正在继续进行种质资源研究，仍在努力开发新一代的耐旱品种。在未来五到十年，我们将能够在北方缺水的地方推广近一亿亩的水稻（种植）面积。
Elsewhere in Songjiang, the harvest of medium and late rice has begun. Some farmers were concerned about the crop due to the excessive heat this summer. Local agriculture service departments helped the farmers.

We were taught to add more water during the day and drain the water at night. We’re planting a new variety of rice. The "1018" rice is of better quality and helps increase our income.

The "1018" rice is one of the quality varieties bred in Songjiang. The rice smells nice and tastes soft. Almost 90 percent of the rice fields in Maogang Town of Songjiang are now planted with the new variety. The local government offered subsidies to encourage farmers to grow organic rice.
“1018”水稻是松江地区选育的优良品种之一。米饭闻起来很香，口感软糯。松江区泖港镇近90%的稻田现在都种植了这一新品种。当地政府提供补贴，鼓励农民种植有机水稻。

As one of the cities facing the challenge of an aging population, Shanghai’s government says it is going to further cultivate【培养】caregivers to improve services for seniors and ensure the care improves the quality of life for senior residents. Zhang Yue has the details.
作为面临人口老龄化挑战的城市之一，上海政府表示将进一步培养护理人员，以提高老年人的养老服务，确保养老护理能够提高老年居民的生活质量。记者张玥带来更多详细报道。
26-year-old Wang Cheng from Sichuan province is a caregiver at the Yangpu Social Welfare Institute. Wang has recently received his Shanghai Hukou as a ‘talent in urgent demand’, the very first of its kind in the city. The incentive plan was released last year by Yangpu district, to encourage more young people to join the senior care industry.
26岁的王程来自四川，是杨浦社会福利院的一名护工。他最近被上海认定为"紧缺急需人才"引进落户，这是上海首位引进的养老护理员。该激励计划于去年由杨浦区发布，旨在鼓励更多年轻人加入养老行业。

The report of the 20th CPC National Congress gives us clear guidance to further focus on the cultivation of talented staff in the senior care industry. This is why we will continue implementing various measures and policies to improve the development of the industry. For instance, we will be giving out a subsidy for caregivers who have just started their jobs, and include them in the list of talents in urgent demand in the city.

Authorities also aim to arrange at least one social worker for each senior care institution or community-level senior home by 2025. The city government said there will be nearly 6 million elderly residents in Shanghai by 2025.

Explosions were heard in Kyiv this morning as several blasts【爆炸】hit the Ukrainian capital, causing several fires and damage to residential blocks.
