Hey there, I'mShen Xiaoya, SMG's GenZ host. The just concluded 20th CPC National Congress setthe tone for China's future development over the coming five years and beyond.

GenZ is of course in the limelight as the older half of the generation has just entered the workforce, while the tail end of the generation is planning for places in graduate programs or the job market.

What do China's Gen Zers plan for their future? And what's their take on their overseas peers' thinking about the issue? Let's find out more.

How would you describe the characteristics of GenZers?

We have unique personalities, and we insist on being ourselves.

Everyone has been online from a very young age, and had opportunities to get in touch with more people. So they may have diverse ideas.

William Allen Dupraw (美国):

I think Generation Z are enthusiastic and energetic.

We are capable and have the opportunities to explore the world.

Varvara Savilova

We are not afraid of a challenge. It’s all about giving it a shot. We don’t worry about it. If we miss the chance or make a mistake, we can always try again.

Likhamsoukyiaseng Tong

It’s the most promising and energetic generation.

What will you pursue after graduation, further education or employment?

Jesslyn Wong

I think that I’m not prepared to begin working yet. So, I may further my studies, allow myself to become more mature and rational, and then enter society.

Varvara Savilova

I want to get a good job. A job that I like, for my mother always told me that the greatest joy in life is finding a career you really like.

What do you care about most when choosing an occupation?

William Allen Dupraw (美国):

Making sure that the work that I’m doing will have a positive impact on my community, both locally and nationally, and even internationally.

There’s a steady stream of innovation in Shanghai which is quite appealing to me.

I don’t want to do the same thing every day. I don’t want a life where Ican easily predict the future. I’m willing to face challenges and the unknown.

Likhamsoukyiaseng Tong

I will choose to work in the railway industry, because we can get a decent salary in this field. It’s a stable job and there are many benefits.

I place more value on the ability to communicate and cooperate with others and really connect as partners. It makes it easier for us to reach an agreement and achieve our common goal.

As you have just stepped (or willsoon step) out into society, how do you deal with the pressure surrounding employment?

Actually, I think it’s quite normal. For me, there is no particular pressure. I just take things as they are. Gold will always find a way to shine.

Pressure comes from our own shortcomings. For me, I overcome the pressure by studying harder and doing more practice. But sometimes, we have to accept our own ordinariness.

Esra Oncar(土耳其):

Like many young people, I do deal with anxiety over finding a job. But I’m trying to fight with it with further education and self-development.

What do you think of the ideas of“involution” or “lying flat”?

LEEMOUA Yiakeexaitouxiong

We should improve ourselves, we shouldn’t stay in the same place, and we shouldn’t view problems from short-sighted perspectives.

Jesslyn Wong

Yes, everybody is working so hard. It’s impossible for me to slack off. So,I roll up my sleeves and get to it.

Noah Namwamba

I tend to not let my environment influence me. I tend to focus entirely onmy future goals, and probably look at how we could team up.

Have you ever considered starting your own business?

I've actually started my own business and it's been quite successful. And I mainly focus on trading. I’m doing okay so far.

If there were more policy subsidies, I think there would be greater prospects for young people to do what they love to do.

Like being a content creator on Little Red book or Douyin. If I have opportunities to step into these emerging industries, I am willing to have a try.

What is the biggest difference between you and your parents’ view of consumption?

If it’s a choice between quality and price, they typically go for price.

Esra Oncar(土耳其):

They don’t like to try new stuff like we do.

LEEMOUA Yiakeexaitouxiong

Since they went through financial difficulties, they are thrifty, they save as much as they can.

One of the major factors of their consumption habits is whether the item isa necessity or not. But perhaps in my mind, I would care more about how it makes me feel.

They save money, and they don’t waste money. But my view of consumption is that I consume only to please myself. As long as I can afford it, I will buy it. I don’t consider the long term.

Live in the moment. Everyone has his/her own life style. Buy whatever you want. I think it’s a good idea.

Do green and low-carbon concepts affect your consumption behavior?

William Allen Dupraw(美国):

The most consistent way that impacts my behavior when it comes to foodwaste, I try really hard not to waste food, to make sure I eat all of my leftovers. And when I cook, I try to make sure that I cook appropriate portions.

My family has plans to buy a car. We are probably going to get a new energy vehicle.

Brands that promote low-carbon concepts or clean production are more appealing to me. If I has to choose between similar products, I would consider those brands first.

What is your biggest wish for thenext 10 years?

I hope to be able to keep some of my hobbies while pursuing my dreams, and make my life more enjoyable.

I just want to be happy from day to day. Everyone is more or less under some kind of pressure. People always say that they are emotional. I also hope to stay positive and rid myself of negative emotions and better develop myself.

Varvara Savilova

I hope that China will continue to develop and everyone becomes even happier and healthier
