Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) represents Maryland’s eighth district in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was first elected in 2016. Prior to that he served as a member of the Maryland State Senate for three terms. He has also taught constitutional law at American University’s College of Law in Washington, D.C. Jim Epstein is the Chairman of EFO Capital Management. As a philanthropist, he has been a supporter of the benefit corporation movement and has worked with non-profit groups. He is also a founder of Blue Ridge Produce in Virginia, which sells regionally gown produce to local wholesalers.
In this show, Lorne speaks with Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) and Jim Epstein, author, entrepreneur and philanthropist, about benefit corporations, which are required by law to consider both long-term financial benefits and impact on society, including impact on workers, the community and the environment. In 2010, as a state senator in Maryland, Raskin was a sponsor of a bill establishing benefit corporations in the state. Jim Epstein has spent decades supporting mission driven investing and social entrepreneurship. One day in 2010, Raskin invited Epstein to take a walk. It was on that walk that Epstein told Raskin about benefit corporations and shortly after Maryland became the first state to pass benefit corporation legislation.
