每日英語跟讀 Ep.K427: About Japan - 2-time Olympic champion Hanyu rings down the curtain on career
Two-time Olympic gold medalist Yuzuru Hanyu announced on July 19 that he was hanging up his skates and retiring from competition after a glorious career that saw his popularity soar worldwide.
Hanyu, 27, held a news conference in Tokyo to announce his retirement.
He won gold medals at the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014 and the Pyeongchang Games four years later, becoming the first repeat Olympic champion in men’s figure skating in 66 years.
Hanyu also won the world championships in 2014 and 2017 as well as four straight Grand Prix Finals from 2013. He also won six All-Japan Championships.
He tried to become the first male figure skater in 94 years to win three consecutive Olympic gold medals, but finished off the podium in fourth at the Beijing Winter Olympics this year.
日本人在83歲成為獨自航越太平洋的最高齡人士 At 83, Japanese becomes oldest to sail solo across Pacific
An 83-year-old Japanese adventurer returned home Saturday after successfully completing his solo, nonstop voyage across the Pacific, becoming the oldest person to reach the milestone.
Kenichi Horie arrived in the Kii Strait off Japan’s western coast, completing his trans-Pacific voyage in 69 days after leaving a yacht harbor in San Francisco in March.
It was the latest achievement for the octogenarian adventurer, who in 1962 became the first person in the world to successfully complete a solo nonstop voyage across the Pacific from Japan to San Francisco.
Horie has also achieved a number of other long distance solo voyages, including sailing around the world in 1974. His latest expedition was the first since his 2008 solo non-stop voyage on a wave-powered boat from Hawaii to the Kii Strait.
掘江也完成過其他許多長程獨旅，包括1974年環航世界。其最新遠征是他2008年以波浪動力船從夏威夷航向紀伊水道以來，第一趟隻身馬不停蹄之旅。Source article: https://features.ltn.com.tw/english/article/paper/1529966 ; https://features.ltn.com.tw/english/article/paper/1523550
