“卡塔尔世界杯”正在如火如荼地进行，今天我们就来聊一聊这个trending topic——the World Cup（世界杯）。

先科普一个小知识：

美式英语和加拿大英语中的football，指的其实是rugby（橄榄球），他们的足球叫soccer，但在其他英语国家，足球都是用football这个词。

1. FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 2022年卡塔尔世界杯

FIFA就是国际足联的简称，世界杯就是the World Cup。

The World Cup is a quadrennial tournament. 是每4年一次的联赛。

It pits the best national soccer teams against each other for the title of world champion.

在世界杯，最好的国家足球队相互竞争世界冠军的头衔。

这次世界杯，从 November 21 到December 18，that's 28 days in total（为期28天）。

一共有32 teams，他们要play 64 games，是全世界足球爱好者的一场狂欢。

①　中国元素随处可见

Chinese elements（中国元素）活跃在赛事的方方面面，比如说Chinese goods（周边商品）、passenger cars(客车）、sponsors（赞助商）， stadium（场馆）等等等等。我们外交部部长发言人华春莹也是连发8推，用8张图片介绍了本次世界杯“随处可见的中国元素”。身为中国人，we’re so proud！

但是，这次的足球杯，中国男足没有参赛，因此就有网友自嘲，“除了中国足球队，其他方方面面的，咱都到场了”。

②　首次在冬季举行

The World Cup has never been held on the Arabian Peninsula before. 世界杯以前从未在阿拉伯半岛举行过，而且之前都是在夏季举行。Summer temperatures in Qatar can be quite high.（卡塔尔夏季温度太高了。）FIFA(国际足联) 最终同意 to move the tournament to the relatively bearable months（相对可以忍受的月份） of November and December.

③　东道主揭幕战92年首败

Ecuador beat hosts Qatar 2-0 in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup. 第一场比赛东道主卡塔尔对战厄瓜多尔，结果厄瓜多尔2:0击败卡塔尔。

因此，卡塔尔成为了“世界杯东道主揭幕战92年首败”！

卡塔尔球迷观众席上，富豪们都垂头丧气，有网友调侃说：“这届世界杯挺好看的，毕竟平日生活中看不到这么多愁眉苦脸的有钱人。”

这次的opening ceremony（开幕式），卡塔尔可谓是斥巨资了，the famous actor Morgan Freeman made an appearance（请到了重量级演员摩根·弗里曼），防弹少年团BTS的田柾国（Jeon Jung Kook）还演唱了歌曲。

Qatar has spent almost 300 billion dollars in preparation for the tournament.卡塔尔为了这次世界杯，花费了近3000亿美元。

所以，这次的世界杯被称作是“史上最贵”世界杯。

所以，今年卡塔尔世界杯被称为——诸神的黄昏。随着老将们纷纷退场，80、90后的青春也将结束在这届世界杯。这无疑给这届世界杯添上了几分悲情色彩。

If one player on a team scores three goals in one game, he will have scored a hat trick.

If the goalkeeper didn’t catch the ball, you can use this one.

接不住球就像是手上抹了butter（黄油），这个是用来调侃守门员的一种说法，比如说，

The goalkeeper is a real butterfingers and always misses the ball.

这个守门员真是一个黄油手，总是接不住球。

l Own goal “乌龙球”

When someone scores a goal on their own net, it is called an own goal. “乌龙球”就是踢进自家球门的球。

① Been driving all day （经过一天的舟车劳顿后），结果看到了让人震惊的比分。加拿大以0:1失了比赛这已经不算什么了， that’s not a bad loss。最让人震惊的是日本竟然以2:1打败了德国！！！

Eli看了日本和德国的这场比赛，他认为Japan deserved the win（日本应取得胜利），因为日本队played hard（踢得很卖力）, and won even though Germany had the ball most of the time（在德国大部分时间都有球的情况下，还是赢了。）

② When you're a clear favorite（当你是夺冠热门的时候），想要赢得世界杯就会more harder，因为其他的队伍会come against you with ALL they've GOT，他们会倾尽全力对抗你。

Argentina and Germany have really underperformed so far.这次世界杯阿根廷和德国都爆了冷门。
