Yan Gaoqiu studied political science and law in college. He has worked as a researcher for a decade. He is now a doctoral candidate. His area of expertise includes China’s political system and government, diplomacy and cross-straits relations.
Today, Gaoqiu talks to us about the significance and the implications of the 20th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party (“CCP”) to be held in late 2022. The National Congress of the CCP meets every five years. In theory, it is the highest governing body within the CCP akin to the shareholders’ meeting within a company. The National Congress since 1980s has become the venue where the new political leadership is formally introduced. Xi Jinping will have governed China for two five-year terms by 2022. By all accounts, he has removed all obstacles to a third term. So will Xi hand pick and introduce his successor at the 20th National Congress of the CCP? Will there be a major reshuffle in his inner circle? Also critically for people in Taiwan, how will Xi deal with Taiwan going into his third term?
Finally, even though Ma Ying-Jeou, Taiwan’s former president, has been consistently and ardently anti-Taiwan independence, why might the CCP still have considered him a “pro-independent” political leader of Taiwan? What’s behind this logic? Let’s take a listen.
