What do global hegemons face today? Nothing happens in vacuum and TUX uncles recounts what has transpired in recent past to set the stage.
Election of Trump as American president sent a clear signal that American populace is turning inward looking. In the midst of the tumults of the Trump presidency, the COVID-19 global pandemic removed the fig leaves that covered the official hubris and weak links around the world all at the same time.
In 2021 alone, despite the chaos in the wake of the US president Biden's pulling out of Afghanistan, it is also a clear signal of the long-discussed American pivot to Asia. This event was quickly followed by the AUKUS deal where US and UK will provide nuclear submarines to Australia which everyone assumes is a way to counter China's bellicose stance in SE Asia in recent years. Finally, Ms Meng of Huawei was released from Canada. While this clearly marked the end of the Trump era, does this foretold a new era of détente or just the start of a new match between China and US is anyone's guess.
Finally, to add spices to these developments, Germany, Russia, Japan, Canada, and, soon, China, will have leadership election.
TUX uncles discuss ideas and ways to view the new world order and options available to superpowers. Vaccine is clearly a new diplomatic tools on the world stage. Behind the scene, China has had much success in engaging with supranational (e.g. UN) agencies occupying leadership positions. As such, this provides China with the ability to set agendas in these multilateral conversations. Finally, on the economic front, despite the interwoven nature of global economy, it is still possible to weaponize specific aspects of economic conditions, such as inflation and FX fluctuation.
