The 2024 Taiwan presidential race intensifies as the six-month countdown begins.
Kuomintang (KMT) candidate Hou Yu-ih, who has been lagging behind in the opinion polls, suddenly expressed his support for the "1992 Consensus" on Monday night. He also promised to maintain peace across the Taiwan Strait and reduce Taiwan's military service from one year to four months.
According to the latest opinion polls, the incumbent Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate Lai Ching-te is leading the race with 35.9% support. The support for Taiwan People’s Party's candidate Ko Wen-je is 28.6% while Hou is in third place at 17.1%. Due to Hou's poor performance, businessman Terry Gou has expressed his desire to replace him as KMT candidate.
Can Hou turn the tide in his favour? Who will emerge as the main opposition candidate when Taiwan holds its next presidential election in January? What are the factors that could influence the outcome of this election?
