Jacob lists the exhibitors that he has identified as ones that he will visit, and makes note of the brands that aren't present this year. More than anything, Jacob feels it's just great to connect with those in the space that share our passion for the outdoors.…
Happy New Year! Welcome to 2025. On today's episode, Jacob shares his growth goals for 2025. In many ways, the 2024 whitetail season was a solid success with two bucks hitting the ground. But, as the 2025 season approaches, Jacob wants to evolve several aspects of how he hunts and where he hunts in an effort to increase opportunities. This includes arrow set up, saddle set up, public ground expansion, and adding a new state, among other things.…
On today's episode, Jacob shares an update on his season...both on public and private. And the value of spending time in the woods now as one can hunt this year's buck and next year's buck. Deer have been pressured and shot at...and any pockets you find now are going to be worth noting and well worth your time in the field. Also, Jacob continues his look at the climbing stick category. This week it is the "Lightweight" category...those sticks under 20 ounces per stick. Some of these sticks are unique and have innovative features...while some lack value and need an update. Take a listen as Jacob breaks down this category.…
On today's episode, Jacob shares an update on his recent public land hunt and some buck encounters that he had as pressured deer behavior has now shifted to limited movement, security and food..with the potential for a secondary rut. Also, Jacob is taking a look at the climbing stick market for mobile hunters and evaluating the numerous options. There are 2 categories of climbing sticks. Those that are over 20 ounces per stick (cruiser weight), and those that are under 20 ounces per stick (light weight). In this episode, Jacob focuses on the climbing sticks that are over 20 ounces per stick. Some of these sticks have unique and innovative features, while other sticks lack value and need an update. Take a listen as Jacob breaks down this product category.…
On today's episode, Jacob shares a list of gear that you may want to consider as you create your own Christmas list. With sales, offers, and closeouts, this time of year is a great time to evolve your gear set up and save a few dollars. Some of the gear that Jacob discusses are: heated base layers, climbing sticks, binoculars, boots, hot stove and hot tents, boot gaiters, neck gaiters, and nuanced mobile hunting gear.…
"Over? Did you say 'over'? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was is over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no! It ain't over now, 'cause when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Who's with me?" Of course, this is a line from the movie Animal House, where Bluto addresses the fraternity. In today's episode, Jacob shares his recent public land hunt and how he plans to pivot now that we are in December. While in many ways it feels like the party is over, there is opportunity and Jacob shares how he will approach this next phase of the deer season.…
In today's episode, Jacob goes through some of his top gear with his mobile whitetail setup. Updating and evolving his setup for quiet and efficient movement has been a process for a number of years as more and more options have become available for mobile hunters. This would include his saddle setup, climbing sticks, headlamp, boots, pack, pants, and other miscellaneous gear. Of course, if you are looking to make some upgrades, now is a good time as many outdoor companies are having Black Friday sales or will be having one soon.…
In today's episode, Jacob details how he broke down a piece of out of state public land, and in relatively short order, tagged a mature 11 pointer. As he outlines his hunt, he goes back to last fall when he felt he needed to add another state to his whitetail season. During the summer, Jacob spend time examining maps of public and private, and tried to identify a drainage system that would have several ridges dumping into it, as well as limited access points. He wanted to avoid any pre-season scouting and simply scout in season. As a result of his efforts, he found a piece that was relatively unpressured, found hot sign, and identified a ridge system that held several mature bucks.…
As the great motivational speaker, Matt Foley, once said, "you're going to live on a steady diet of government cheese, and be living in a van down by the river". And if that sounds like you right now during the whitetail rut, then congratulations, you're doing the rut right. In today's episode, Jacob shares how he was able to gain new access to private hunting ground by doing a good deed and helping a stray dog find a new situation. Also, Jacob discusses the pressure that is on maintaining hunting as a way of life. And lastly, Jacob shares some of the gear he has in his "van" in order to live over the next week or so as he bounces from 2 different pieces of public in 2 different states.…
In today's episode, Jacob shares his rut experiences as he is bouncing to 2 different pieces of big woods public land in 2 different nearby states. He has had some encounters with bucks cruising and has had some success in finding good bucks on a new piece of hill country public. Listen as Jacob breaks down his approach on these 2 pieces of terrain and what he is paying attention to and how he is setting up accordingly. Also, Jacob shares his recent failure to put an effective lethal arrow through a public land buck.…
On today's episode, Jacob shares his thoughts on hunting a new state with big woods public ground and how his recent hunt went. The rut was firing up on this piece of public and should be increasing every day of the next few weeks. Jacob also shares a bit about his recent interaction with anti-hunters and how they view "conservation". Lastly, Jacob shares part 2 of the saddle platform evaluation. This episode covers the XL size platforms (174 square inches to 200 square inches). Brands discussed during this episode include: Hunt Arsenal, Tethrd, Timber Ninja, Latitude, and Trophyline.…
On today's episode, Jacob provides an update on his hunts during last week's cold front, some encounters, some mistakes, and some opportunities. Jacob also shares his experience with a fired up buck while hunting on the ground during the 2 day muzzleloader weekend. This buck apparently thought Jacob was a competing buck and not only saw Jacob, but cut the distance in half to 60 yards as he postured and challenged Jacob. As a result, that buck got a bullet through his heart. Listen as Jacob shares his thoughts on shooting a buck that wasn't his target buck...but was the right buck to take.…
In today's episode, Jacob provides a brief update on his season, and shares the end of an era as his number of hunting partners slowly dwindles down. And, Jacob breaks down his ranking of large hunting saddle platforms (132 to 153 square inches) based on a variety of parameters. This includes platforms from Tropyline, Tethrd, Cruzr, XOP, Lone Wolf Customer Gear, Wild Edge, Hawk, and Out On A Limb. Be sure to check out next weeks episode when Jacob breaksdown the x-large saddle platforms (174 to 200 square inches), and provides an update on his season.…
In today's episode, Jacob further breaks down another hunt on a hill country public land piece that has good buck and doe traffic. Why is it that deer like edge? And, where can you find edge that plays into your hunt goals and is often overlooked by other hunters? Jacob discusses the edge value of creek systems during early season and how he set up and had an encounter with a quality 4 year old buck recently. Unfortunately, details matter and that is why good is the enemy of great...failure to be meticulous with details usually translates into failure during bow season.…
In today's episode, Jacob breaks down his first sit of the whitetail season and his encounter with 2 public land bucks. Jacob also dives into his hopes and dreams for this season. Every deer season is a season of opportunity, but how will it all play out? Filling tags as quickly as possible and hunting opportunistically is how Jacob is approaching this season. Hunting from a mobile saddle set up...bouncing from small private parcels to big woods public land across several states...and trying to find the area that is hot for that particular moment. It is an exciting time. Let's go!…
In today's episode, Jacob breaks down gear that he used on his recent 10 day elk hunt out west, and shares the successes and failures of the gear he brought (boots, satellite communicator, coolers, power system, headlamps, meals, hunting pack, bugle tube, neck knife, other gear). Of course, nothing tests your gear like an out of state multi-day hunt. You end up getting to know your gear on a very nuanced level as something breaks, squeaks, or simply fails altogether. Nothing can be more frustrating than a piece of gear that doesn't perform. In fact, it can adversely impact your entire hunt. On the other hand, when you find the right piece of gear that makes your hunt easier and more efficient, it is incredibly satisfying.…
In today's episode, Jacob has returned from his Colorado elk hunt and reports that he was in fact bluff charged by a bull moose. He was not harmed...but neither were any elk during this hunt unfortunately. That said, there were some key themes and key takeaways from the hunt that Jacob addresses. Notably, how his mindset evolved and how he maintained a focus on the journey, demonstrated patience, and held a high level of confidence despite in the field set backs. He also shares how he found elk and created shot opportunities despite the low elk density and the fact that the elk were not bugling a great deal. Lastly, Jacob shares how his thoughts on solo elk hunting have evolved.…
On today's episode, Jacob shares his own struggles with mindset as it relates to his upcoming solo elk hunt out west. Letting go of the steering wheel related to work life, related to home life and other commitments can be difficult when leaving on a 2 week trip in the backcountry. The patience that is required to play the "long game" with an archery elk hunt can also prove to be difficult. We all want results now, so we can move on to the next thing...but that is just not how hunting works. Lastly, confidence in one's hunt plan can also impact the actual in the field success or failure. How does one remain confident when the odds are against you. As you listen, you may find that you can relate to these mindset challenges while in the field.…
On today's episode, Jacob runs through a list of whitetail season chores that you may want to take care of in prep for the season as whitetail seasons begin to open across the country this month and next. As you know, when the season opens, you don't want to dedicate any amount of time to activities that could or should have been taken care of during the off season...so now is your chance to take note and get these items done before it's too late. For example, last minute property access and networking, thanking current private access owners, shooting your broadheads, setting up cams on potential feed trees, and other potential chores. Let's get this stuff done and set up the season for success!…
On today's episode, Jacob outlines how to discern between white and red oaks, and more specifically, some of the subtypes of white and red oak trees that cover different regions of the midwest, northeast, and southeast. As archery deer seasons begin to open across the country, identifying the hot oak flat for whitetails can translate into early season success. White oak flats specifically can be ideal areas for bucks to stage prior to coming to soybeans or corn, they can also serve as a primary food source on properties that lack agriculture. As the season moves on and other food sources wane, red oak acorns can be an option to target as well.…
In today's episode, Jacob shares his thoughts on the finale of this year's Total Archery Challenge (TAC), as it wrapped up the tour in Southern Indiana. TAC offers a variety long range 3D shots that challenge archers in shot placement and angles. TAC has typically toured the western states, but over the past 2 years has expanded their tour east. Additionally, Jacob provides some updates and insights on his hunting "chores" as the season is closing in quickly.…
Mobile hunting gear for the public land whitetail hunter continues to evolve as more and more small manufacturers of saddles, platforms, and accessories continue to enter the market. One sticking has become more and more popular with saddle hunters, in addition to using a set of sticks combined with a hang on platform. But, what about a climber platform designed specifically for saddle hunters? On today's episode, Jacob examines four brands of climber saddle platforms that are currently on the market. This includes the Quick Climb from Panther Platforms, the Mark II from Broadside Stands, the Lead Ascent Alpha from Osprey Outdoors, and the Highlander from Barren Ridge Treestands.…

If you hunt other states, the amount of information available to you in order to plan your hunt has increased significantly over the past decade. From YouTube, Podcasts, Forums, Pay Wall Information, Facebook Groups, etc. So, where will this expand to in the next 5 to 10 years? How will it evolve and spread from other states that you hunt, to your state, your county, and eventually your own backyard? If you think that the availability of information on other states has been helpful, just wait until you have individuals and companies chatting up your favorite piece of public land and exposing your own hunting spots...all in the name of "helping others" and "mentoring".…
While cell cams will continue to evolve in size, picture quality and other specs, the greatest opportunity for differentiation within the market is the evolution of the app that accompanies the cell cam. Cell cam apps are now incorporating artificial intelligence, tagging of specific animals, and greater sorting features. But, what about all the other data that pics provide. That is where the real separation in the product category will happen next. The data collected from your fleet of cell cams will help you create a micro predictive deer movement model based on your property to help you allocated your time more effectively in the field. This is where cell cam apps are going and you should pay close attention to the companies that evolve this space accordingly.…
Over the past 5 years, the cellular trail camera market has evolved tremendously. The quality of pictures and video have increased, trigger speeds are faster, and the price of the actual camera and the corresponding data plans have dropped. In today's episode, Jacob shares the his ranking of 9 different cellular trail cameras for 2024, and the pros and cons of each respective camera. This includes commentary on cellular trail cameras from Moultrie, Exodus, Tactacam, Bushnell, SpyPoint, Muddy, StealthCam and more.…

What he found was that there are some clear winners and some clear losers and today he runs through some of the categories that he used to evaluate these options for 2024.…
In today's episode, Jacob continues the discussion on braodheads by discussing some of what he likes and doesn't like with the composition of today's broadheads. Some of the more popular broadheads from companies like Iron Will, Cutthroat, Valkyrie, VPA are made with a grade of Tool Steel. How do those compare to broadheads from Slick Trck, NAP and QAD that have 400 Series Stainless Steel blades. Lastly, Jacob discusses some new broadheads from Sevr, Oz Cut, Evolution and Annihilator.…
Every year a new batch of broadheads hit the market and for whatever reason, it excites us as we imagine how much more efficient and effective a new broadhead could be when compared to our current broadhead set up. Expandable or mechanical broadheads are especially interesting as there are new ways in which these heads deploy a variety of blades. In today's episode, Jacob shares his thoughts on his recent evaluation of 6 different expandable broadheads: Sevr 2.0, Sevr 1.75, Mega Meat, Dead Meat, Grim Reaper Whitetail Special, and Rage Hypodermic NC + P.…
You've done everything you can possibly do to prepare for your trek west to hunt elk this September, but what if everything doesn't go as planned? What if there is car trouble on the trip? What if you have issues with your bow? Have you set up systems at home to ensure things go smoothly for your family while you are out? We all know that there is an "inertia" that often keeps us home from hunting trips or cuts our trips short.
