Practicing at firm Bird & Bird, Tobias Bräutigam is Senior Counsel and Head of the Privacy and Data Protection group in Helsinki. In the past Tobias
has also worked as Senior Legal Counsel at Microsoft and Nokia.
In this episode Tobias and I analyse the decision Schrems II and discuss the business and societal impacts. Tobias also explains what drew him to Law and Technology and where Data Protection Law may move in the future.

SCHREMS II:

On Thursday 16th July 2020, the European Court of Justice heard the case of Schrems II, which concerned the legality of international data transfers. Overall, the judgement ruled that the US-EU Privacy Shield is not a valid way to transfer data between the EU and US, and more suitable means would need to be used. For an overview of what discussion points there were prior to the hearing, you can read Tobias' analysis here on LinkedIn. You can also find the full judgement here and the European Data Protection Board's recommendation here.
