My Mortality Matters: The Voices and Lives of Black Men

I had the opportunity to interview the attorneys Mrs. Ruby Wharton and Andre Wharton about their client Brandon Calloway. Brandon was severely beaten and arrested by the police of Oakland, Tennessee in July as a result of his failure to stop for a traffic violation. His attorneys recount the incident that leads to Brandon's brutal police assault and arrest. They also discuss the toll that this incident has taken on Brandon's mental health. Additionally, Mrs. Ruby Wharton discusses how along with her husband they raised their sons and the joy she has that her sons are part of the family's law firm. *** Since the taping of this interview, the grand jury decided not to indict the police officers, and Brandon's attorneys have requested that the US Department of Justice takes his case. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mymortalitymatters/message…

The barbershop is the rite of passage for all Black boys and Black men. The barber has represented a form of “ therapy “ for some Black men. As a therapist, I know that therapists are “holders” of secrets and the barber in some cases is a “holder” of secrets too. In this conversation, Nafis and I navigate through the complexity, triumphs, life lessons, questions, and experiences that have shaped his life and the lives of other Black men. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mymortalitymatters/message…
