When a young Eva Kollisch arrives as a refugee in New York in 1940, she finds a community among socialists who share her values and idealism. She soon discovers ‘the cause’ isn’t as idyllic as it seems. Little does she know this is the beginning of a lifelong commitment to activism and her determination to create radical change in ways that include belonging, love and one's full self. In addition to Eva Kollisch’s memoirs Girl in Movement (2000) and The Ground Under My Feet (2014), LBI’s collections include an oral history interview with Eva conducted in 2014 and the papers of Eva’s mother, poet Margarete Kolllisch, which document Eva’s childhood experience on the Kindertransport. Send us a text On Christmas Eve, Ricardo Karam meets a pioneering Lebanese artist who has left an indelible mark on the world of Lebanese music and theater: Ronza. Her real name is Aida Maroun Tomb, but she was given the name "Ronza" by the legendary poet Said Akl. A multi-talented individual, Ronza studied psychology at the Lebanese University and earned a diploma in classical Arabic singing from the Lebanese National Conservatory under the mentorship of Badia Haddad. She further specialized in solfège for six years with Professor Tawfiq Sukkar. Ronza is a cherished figure in Rahbani theater, having been an integral part of their artistic journey. She performed in several iconic musical plays presented by the Rahbani brothers, such as The Conspiracy Continues, The Person, and The Seventh Spring. She started her career singing in the choir behind Fairuz in various productions, and her solo performances shone in works like At Summer’s End, Hello Beirut, and Santa’s Journey. Her professional path is also deeply intertwined with academia. As a professor at the Lebanese National Conservatory, she has trained many students specializing in classical operatic singing and has conducted workshops in solfège. In addition to her solo career, Ronza joined forces with her sisters Amal and Fadia to form the group Tri Orient. Together, they performed in concerts and religious hymns across various countries, releasing three remarkable albums: Miladiyat, Christmas in the City, and Abu Dhabi Concert. Frustrated by the stereotypical view of Lebanon, she embarked on a mission to unveil her country’s hidden beauty and rich heritage. Her acclaimed book, A Million Steps (2010), encapsulates this mission. Through a photographic memoir documenting her journey across Lebanon, Hana reveals the country's breathtaking landscapes from north to south. The book, now in its third edition, inspired a movement to preserve Lebanon’s hiking trails and reimagine its global image. Her latest project, Meelo!, delves into Lebanese culinary heritage, celebrating rural life and the natural ingredients that sustain it. Born in Beirut in 1961, Maxime's early life was marked by the Lebanese Civil War, leading his family to seek refuge abroad. He pursued his education across Greece, France, Canada, and the United Kingdom, ultimately earning a Bachelor of Science with honors from the London School of Economics. Maxime's passion for extreme sports led him to achieve remarkable feats. In May 2006, he became the first Lebanese to summit Mount Everest, completing the Seven Summits challenge, the highest peak on each continent. He further distinguished himself by skiing unassisted to both the South Pole in 2007 and the North Pole in 2009, becoming the first from the Middle East to reach these milestones. Beyond mountaineering, Maxime set a world speed record in 2013 by rowing across the Indian Ocean from Australia to Mauritius in 57 days, 15 hours, and 49 minutes. In 2016, he and his teammate became the first to cross the Empty Quarter desert on bicycles, covering approximately 1,500 kilometers in 21 days. Maxime's journey is a testament to human endurance and the pursuit of excellence. His story continues to inspire many to overcome challenges and reach new heights. She fondly remembers announcing Georgina Rizk's victory as Miss Universe live in July 1971, filling Télé-Liban with gifts that night. Later, she transitioned to Arabic programs, excelling in shows focused on women’s empowerment. Raymonde’s career took her from media to jewelry, living in Switzerland and Japan before returning to Lebanon to teach etiquette. An active member of the Saint-Vincent-de-Paul Society, she still writes poems celebrating her homeland. Despite personal losses, including the kidnapping and murder of her husband, Pierre, during the civil war, Raymonde’s resilience shines through.
