The government has announced reforms granting retailers greater power to detain shoplifters. Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith says the changes, proposed by a ministerial advisory group, will provide Kiwi businesses with more tools to protect their livelihoods. But there are serious concerns the changes will put retail workers at serious risk. RNZ Asia's Blessen Tom reports.…

Foreign Minister Winston Peters has held his first bilateral meeting in China noting the two countries won't always agree. Meeting with Vice President Han Zheng this afternoon Mr Peters said he was delighted to be in China and our two countries have a long history but will have differences. But his visit comes amid heightened tensions here and in Australia over the presence of three Chinese naval ships conducting exercises in the Tasman sea. RNZ's Corin Dann spoke to Lisa Owen from Beijing.…

Checkpoint has reported on a litany of issues experienced by some schools during the rollout of the revamped school lunch programme this term. Unpalatable lunches, meals arriving late or missing altogether, ham in food intended for Muslim students, repetitive menus. One example: butter chicken 11 times out of 17, and some schools having to buy takeaways so kids don't go hungry. The programme's expected to deliver a million "palatable" & "nutritious" lunches to about 240,000 students each week. The tax payer tab for first year is an estimated 71 million dollars. School Lunch Collective boss Paul Harvey spoke to Lisa Owen.…

Once again a report has found the state agency meant to protect our children is failing to meet minimum standards of care for tamariki and rangatahi. 507 children and young people were abused or neglected while in the care of Oranga Tamariki over the past year according to a report by the Independent Childrens Monitor. That's up on the year before. A shortage of approved non-whanau care givers also means a growing number of children are being parked up in motels under the care of social workers until placements can be found. 176 tamariki under Oranga Tamariki's care spent a total of 2648 nights in motels. Chief Executive of Aroturuki Tamariki Arran Jones spoke to Lisa Owen.…

Dairy is New Zealand's most profitable export industry, but also one of our biggest carbon emitters, so what if you could take the cow, and methane, out of the production process altogether? That's what one Auckland food-tech startup is working on, making dairy-identical proteins using a process called precision fermentation. DaisyLab has attracted interest from the traditional dairy industry, and is hoping to take their production to the next step, by scaling up to a one-thousand litre pilot production plant this year. Luka Forman reports.…

Amendments to the crimes act will mean citizens can intervene and detain someone who for example is making off with a trolley full of groceries without paying. The power will extend to any crimes act offences, so that includes murder, manslaughter, assault and family or sexual violence, and theft. The Justice Minister said at the moment security guards are not protected from civil or criminal liablity if they detain someone pinching goods worth less than a thousand dollars. CEO of the Security Association Gary Morrison spoke to Lisa Owen.…

China has brushed off a live-firing incident last week in international waters between New Zealand and Australia as nothing much out-of-the-ordinary. However, more details have emerged in the Australian parliament of the dramatic minutes that followed when a commercial jet was warned it was flying into hazardous skies ahead. Australian correspondent Nick Grimm spoke to Lisa Owen.…
