Illumination and Universal's "Despicable Me 4" , which opened Wednesday in theatres across the United States, grossed $27 million on its first day of release, with an estimated $120 million at the North American box office over five days.
That's a good start for the fourth instalment in the main franchise, and the sixth in the Despicable Me / Minions series, which collectively ranks as the highest-grossing animated franchise of all time.
DM4 , which scored a brilliant A on CinemaScore, will have no trouble snatching the box office crown from Pixar and Disney's blockbuster Inside Out 2 , which is already in its fourth weekend.
However, even with the arrival of DM4, Inside Out 2, which passed the $1 billion mark in worldwide ticket sales in record time, looks set to earn $50 million more by Sunday. In doing so, the film will become only the third animated movie to surpass $500 million in North America.
Both films are good news for the animated family market, which was decimated by the COVID-19 pandemic but is now recovering.
