In this episode of @AuManufacturing Conversations with Brent Balinski, we hear from Ahmed Mahil, founder and CEO of Luyten.
Mahil tells us about his company, which began in 2020 and is the country's first maker of 3D concrete printers, adoption of their technology here and abroad so far, why the country needs a stronger electronics industry, and more.
Episode guide
35 – An introduction to Luyten and to the issues it is addressing.

55 – The team’s background in mechatronics research and teaching. “What led us to this is we were talking about something everyone in our age group talks about – but it’s all complaining. No solutions. This is the most significant purchase in anyone’s life, to own a house.”

20 – FBR was an inspiration.

20 – What they’ve developed so far. Robots and their inhouse cementitious material, Ultimatecrete.

20 – Building the first-ever 3D printed house in the Southern Hemisphere to show they could be building code-compliant.

40 – US is the leading adopter: “We’ve got more sales there than here in Australia in the first year.” Mostly residential construction.

30 – It’s not about the glitz and glamour of new technology, but “the food chain” in the building industry and benefiting each of the players in it.

40 – Currently hiring in technical and admin roles.

50 – What’s easy to do in Australia and what isn’t.

30 – Is structural reinforcement necessary?

30 – Standards development working with ISO/ASTM. First draft published late-last year.

45 – How 3D printing has changed things for machine builders and how it will improve life for architects. “Now we’re telling them, ‘okay, what you’ve been saying and hearing for 30 years? Could you forget about that and give us more curves?’”

20 – Other modern methods of construction benefiting from the influence of manufacturing, with the example of PT Blink.

40 – We need more TAFE programs dealing with high-tech systems. “... It’s not all about the engineers. We need technicians as well. So there is a gap there.”
