In the mid 1980’s as the timber and mill industry in Central Oregon was in a downturn, a group of local community members began providing free nutritious meals in a safe and caring environment to anyone in need. 36 years later that small group has evolved into the present-day Family Kitchen organization and continues the mission by providing over 9,000 meals a month to those in our region feeling the reality that comes with food insecurity. On episode #20, I have the pleasure of sitting down with Donna Burklo, Program Director for Family Kitchen and Family Kitchen volunteer and community member Ruth Williamson to discuss the role Family Kitchen plays as we see an increase of both food and housing insecurity in Central Oregon. Donna, Ruth thanks for sharing your time and talents with me, I learned a lot from you both. To say that the work Family Kitchen and all its volunteers do is amazing is simply an understatement.
