Biking Wickham Trail
Wickham Park is a 391 acre park located in Melbourne, Florida. It contains lots of amenities, including campgrounds, disc golf course, equestrian facilities, archery range, off-leash dog park, bicycle/jogging roadway, nature trails, exercise trails, ball fields, an event pavilion, picnic pavilions, playground, and swimming lakes
1. We were surprised at how many trails were actually within the park.
2. The park had an RV/Camping area, that we remembered we almost stayed there when we first came out to live in Florida but there were no vacancies.
Lessons Learned
- Quality was bad. Have both cameras in the same mode or when downloading it would only allow the majority of filming in the lessor quality. So Jason had his phone set on 1080p and therefore our final video had to be in 1080p which made playback on a tv screen really blurry. It was a lesson learned to have both cameras set the same.
- I had bought a camera holder for my bike, however the arm was too short. Every time I would try and get on and off the bike, it would hit the camera. It also had to be tilted in a way that I really couldn’t see what I was filming.
- It was our first time videoing while riding bikes. I was overly concerned about the camera falling off. I felt like I couldn’t ride the bike, how I would normally ride. The shots look like I can’t ride a bike lol. When in fact Jason and I have done serious bike trials in the past.
4. This adventure takes a lot of time to set up because you have to pack more things before you can go, similar to the kayak adventures.
Fun Facts-Turkey Creek Kayak Adventure
Here are some fun facts about Turkey Creek Sanctuary in Palm Bay, Florida:
- Wildlife: The sanctuary is home to many species of native Florida wildlife, including manatees, alligators, gopher tortoises, and bobcats.
- Birds: The sanctuary is part of the Great Florida Birding Trail, and is a major stopover for migratory birds like ospreys, owls, woodpeckers, and purple martins.
- Creek: Turkey Creek is a major tributary of the Indian River Lagoon. The creek is brackish, with a natural brown color from tannins in oak leaves.
- Sand dunes: The sanctuary is built on a small section of an ancient Atlantic Ocean dune that may be over 2,000 years old.
- Boardwalk: The sanctuary has a 1.85-mile boardwalk that winds through the sanctuary's wet and moist hammocks, and sand pine scrub communities.
Kayaking Turkey Creek
- We were surprised at how beautiful it was but also how creepy it made us feel. The further you went down the more dense foliage and canopy coverage the more isolated we felt.
- There was a lot of big fish popping out of the water. Jason later found out that is was bass fish. There was one point where the kayak rolled over onto something very large underwater that popped up around us in the footage.
Lessons Learned
- Learning the area a little better before we Kayak down the river lol, we got lost a couple times.
- Also read more reviews looking for issues with kayaking in general. Some of the areas had lots of fallen trees in the water causing issues of getting the kayak stuck.
- I think people take for granted when you are watching video and what it takes for people to work together to make the video. Working together requires, listening and problem solving all while you are filming. I didn’t realize how much comes into play.
- Having a really good idea of what you are filming, who, what, when and where. We are learning how to tell a story.
