In April 1943, four young boys were searching for eggs when they stumbled upon human remains stuffed into the hollow trunk of a wych elm tree. Six months after the discovery, the graffiti began appearing inquiring of the as yet unknown victim, “Who put Bella in the wych elm?” While people have posited answers to that question ranging from someone involved in the occult to spies, all possibilities seem fraught with a lack of concrete evidence.
