The assignment was to make a sonic representation of my tastes and influences. So, for my audio collage I went through all of my playlists and chose songs from each playlist that really portrayed why I like that particular style of music. Then, I did my best to narrow it down to around 20 songs that made up the history of my musical interest and inspiration. To accurately portray this, I decided to use samples from tuning an FM radio and stopping momentarily at the songs I chose. The songs and why I chose them are as follows: Philip Baily feat. Phil Collins - Easy Lover This song just happened to be the song I chose to show my love for 80s music. It might not have even been made in the 80s, but it's in that playlist and that's the song that made the cut. Janet Jackson - Escapade Showing my love for 90s music. There were a lot of songs I chose and I wish I could have added more, but it had to be less than 2 minutes. What's interesting about this song is it's something I heard growing up and forgot about for years until I heard it over the radio in a grocery store. I love those moments when you find songs you forgot about and fall in love with them all over again. Nine Inch Nails - Right Where it Belongs This song represents my love for the alternative music I grew up with. More appropriate for this style would have been Stone Temple Pilots or Nirvana, but I couldn't not feature this song because it's amazing. Journey - Girl Can't Help It Motley Crue - Primal Scream Ugly Kid Joe - Panhandlin' Prince These song represent what I refer to as "butt rock," more commonly referred to as hair bands or glam rock. This music is huge for me since, to this day, I still go to these concerts dressed like I'm in the 80s and wearing a mullet wig. Lovage - To Catch a Thief Childish Gambino - Redbone Chris Cornell - Nothing Compares to You Now we're into my "chill shit" playlist. Lovage is a big deal to me because their band represents many types of music that I love (rock, alternative, hip-hop, turntablism, etc). If you're not familiar, they are made up of Mike Patton (Faith No More), Jennifer Charles (Elysian Fields), Kid Koala, and Dan the Automator (Dr. Octagon, Gorillaz, Handsome Boy Modeling School). Pink Floyd - Time Queen - You're My Best Friend These songs represent my love for classic rock. The Queen song is also my wife and I's "song." Justin Timberlake - Last Night Miguel feat. J. Cole - All I Want is You These songs represent my love for pop, club, and R&B. Killswitch Engage - Unbroken Marilyn Manson - The Reflecting God Hard rock and metal. Kendrick Lamar - Westside Right on Time A Tribe Called Quest - Find a Way Busta Rhymes - Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See (performed by Z-Trip and Radar) These songs represent my love for good hip-hop and also my love for scratching and turntablism. TRU - Heaven for a Gangsta Too $hort - I'm a Player These songs represents some of the rap I listened to for a short time in high school. Rise Against - Survive There should be a lot more songs in the category but this represents the punk music I also listened to in high school. Weird fact though, I didn't learn about Rise Against till about 3 years ago, 15 years after high school. DNA/Ham - About U Darrien Kelly & The Stunned Guys - Main Muthafuckas These songs represent my introduction to electronic music and the rave scene. This happened in around 1997. I started DJ'ing this kind of music back in 2000 before moving on to Drum and Bass in 2001. DJ Funk - Hold Up Booty House, which isn't really around any more, will always have a special place in my heart. More music from back when I was introduced to the rave scene. Known Unknown - Rollers Edit Dieselboy - The Descent (Decoder Remix) Finally, these songs represent the music I've been DJ'ing for about 17 years and learning to produce for 3 or so.
