Is your technique resulting in the best possible stitches? Clean holes provide a better appearance when you need to share them with multiple threads. Thanks to Sassy Jacks Stitchery for sponsoring this first in a series of shows in which we discuss, in depth, various aspects of stitching, as requested by our listeners. This week we talk about the pros, cons, and different types of scroll frames and how/when we use them. Then we move on to our views of the stitch path, i.e., how you approach stitching an element in a project to result in the best stitch structure, cleanest holes, and optimum overall appearance. Note that what we offer is simply our opinion/approach and we only offer these techniques for your consideration when stitching your own projects. There is no right or wrong approach. Stitch your projects the way that gives you the most enjoyment. If what we offer helps, so much the better. We also welcome your reactions and thoughts. In addition, consider supporting Fiber Talk by becoming a Patreon member at patreon.com/Fiber Talk.–Beth, Cindy, Gary Listen to the podcast: https://wetalkfiber.com/podcasts/ft378.mp3 Below is the video version of this show. “Goodnight Moon” needle art diorama by Dundee & Lee. “Goodnight Moon,” the beloved children’s story by Margaret Wise Brown, is the focus of this week’s textile arts exploration with Emilie Dundee Odeile and Ken Lee Chapin of Dundee & Lee. The story of how Emilie and Ken met from across the country and formed a partnership and company to create outstanding needle art displays is straight out of a Hollywood movie script. Their signature piece, so far, is the life-sized diorama, “Goodnight Moon, A Fiber Tale,” which was constructed with 152 miles of yarn and nearly 6 million stitches. It’s a stunning piece that has already been admired by thousands of lovers of needle arts and the book. But the real story is how these impressive, creative artists are making their visions become reality and available for the public to enjoy. Be sure to visit their website and watch the videos on YouTube to thoroughly enjoy their work. For lovers of “Goodnight Moon,” their video of the reading by Jason and Jett using animation of the diorama will bring back childhood memories.–Gary Listen to the podcast: https://wetalkfiber.com/podcasts/ft377.mp3 This show is also available on FlossTube. “Hardanger Filling Stitches,” Yvette Stanton’s latest book, is a treasure-trove of hardanger filling stitches. Instructions for the impressive sampler are included in “Hardanger Filling Stitches.” Yvette Stanton returns for the fourth time to talk about her latest book Hardanger Filling Stitches . The show is sponsored by the Embroiderer’s Guild of America. Be sure to check out the Through the Needle’s Eye galleries at the EGA website. Hardanger Filling Stitches is an impressive collection of 100 filling stitches and variations, all presented in Yvette’s superb style of easily followed step-by-step diagrams and instructions, grouped by stitch type. Maybe one of the most useful features of the book is the Filling Stitch Pictorial Index, which lets you quickly find the look you want and then turn to the instructions. In our conversation we learn how the book was put together, how it functions, and the value it provides needleworkers, particularly in concert with Yvette’s excellent Early-Style Hardanger book. There is no one better at the whitework technique and Yvette Stanton’s library of how-to books is unmatched. For U.S. listeners, your best source for the books is Sassy Jacks Stitchery, the official distributor for most of the catalog and provider of all of her books.–Beth and Gary Listen to the podcast: https://wetalkfiber.com/podcasts/ft375.mp3 This show is also available on FlossTube. The Royal School of Needlework book, “200 Essential Embroidery Stitches,” is available from our sponsor, Sassy Jacks Stitchery. Stitch instructions in the RSN book are extremely well done and easy to follow. This week’s show, sponsored by Sassy Jacks Stitchery, is not our usual needle art designer interview. The good folks at the Royal School of Needlework, through publisher Search Press, have published a new book that we feel should be in the library of every needleworker. The book, 200 Essential Embroidery Stitches , is an excellent print extension of the Royal School’s powerful Stitch Bank. In this week’s show, Beth and Gary do an in-depth review of the book. Prior to publishing this week’s show, we contacted Kim at Sassy Jacks and she has ordered a supply so you can order it and have it shipped to you as soon as Kim receives her shipment.–Beth and Gary Listen to the podcast: https://www.wetalkfiber.com/podcasts/ft374.mp3 This show is also available on FlossTube. Floral arrangement by Amy Jones. Purse designed and embroidered by Amy Jones. We travel to Australia this week to talk with embroidery artist Amy Jones of Grandpa Cat. Our show is sponsored by Sassy Jacks Stitchery. Amy is a multi-faceted artist who works primarily with needle and thread using new and recycled materials. She also designs coloring pages, creates embroidery kits, teaches embroidery workshops, and frequently exhibits her art. While she is skilled at painting and drawing, Amy prefers needle and thread because of the way it allows her to express her interpretations of nature, either in the realistic or abstract form. As for the company name Grandpa Cat, you’ll have to listen to the conversation to learn where that originated. After you listen to the conversation, visit Amy’s website to experience her work.–Beth and Gary Listen to the podcast: https://wetalkfiber.com/podcasts/ft370.mp3 This show is also available on FlossTube.
