You probably know the tale of Jolly Old St. Nicholas: the kindhearted man who leaves wonderful toys, gifts, and treats for the well-behaved of the world every year on December 24th. But do you know what happens to all of the not-so-nice children who deserve coal in their stockings??
Krampus is a figure from Central European folklore. Often depicted as a horned, demonic creature, Krampus is believed to accompany St. Nicholas (Santa Claus) during the holiday season. While St. Nicholas rewards well-behaved children with gifts, Krampus is said to punish, or even abduct, misbehaving children.
Now, if kidnapping, whipping children with tree branches, and possible cannibalism wasn’t festive enough for you, some areas of the Alpine region also have Frau Perchta, otherwise known as The Christmas Witch. She wants to make sure you weren't lazy this year and kept a clean home. There's the ogress Gryla and her Yule Cat who work together to kidnap naughty children from their beds and turn them into stew. And several more tales sure to have you re-evaluating your behavior this year.
