×A classic story of entrepreneurial grit, a passion for something and the willingness to persevere when things don’t go quite according to plan. Central to it all was a remarkable woman – Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin. Managing innovation isn’t a matter of abstract systems or process flow charts; it's much closer to the challenge of planting and tending an orchard. A rich harvest of innovation fruit comes from strong branches on trees which have matured thanks to careful cultivation. Maintaining what's already established and allowing for new shoots, sprouting in new directions, opening up more possibilities for future growth. This doesn't happen by accident. We need to think about 'innovation horticulture' - how best to manage the orchard. This podcast explores that idea. How having an innovation management standard can help — and why it might get in the way (you can find a transcript for this podcast at the ' Managing innovation' website, together with many other useful resources - please check it out) A standard is an old word for a flag. Back in the days of sailing ships you could see a forest of them fluttering at the stern of ships of all shapes and sizes, proudly declaring their allegiance to a particular country. And right now in the innovation world we’ve got a similar display of ‘ships’ — organizations of various shapes and sizes all flying the new ISO 56000 flag — the Innovation Management Standard. This podcast explores the ISO standard and looks at what it means for innovation management practitioners…

The great management writer W. Edwards Deming had a powerful introduction to his talks on quality management. Pulling out a dollar bill and waving it in front of the audience he would point out the wording: ‘In God we trust’ — and then go on to comment that in business life the same principle could be applied, but with the afterthought ‘…everything else we should measure’. In this podcast we speak with Dietmar Schloesser, responsible for digital innovation at the German company TuV-Nord. You can find a transcript together with many other resources, video, audio, cases, tools, even some songs - at my website here…

German pump-maker Wilo is paused to celebrate its big anniversary next year and it owes a great deal of its survival and growth to innovation, something it has worked hard to build into its culture. And with the kind of challenges we now face it’s also clear that the development of skills and capabilities to work with innovation are also becoming essential — they are no longer the province of specialists but something we all need to acquire and practice. They are becoming life skills — but developing them across the population raises a...…

It should do; evolutionary psychologists are pretty clear that the ability to play (and therefore imagine and simulate a variety of situations) developed as an important adaptive mechanism.
