In December 2024 the government published its English Devolution White Paper, setting out a plan to further spread devolution across the country.
The government itself referred to it as ‘the greatest transfer of power from Westminster in a generation’, and it’s not for nothing that the proposed strategic authorities were instantly dubbed ‘mega’ authorities on account of their sheer size.
Joining us to discuss all of this are Dr Jonathan Carr-West, who this year celebrates 12 years as chief executive of the Local Government Information Unit; Joe Fyans, head of research at the local government think-tank Localis; and Justin Galliford, chief executive at Norse Group.
It’s certainly a generationally ambitious programme of local government reorganisation. But how realistic is it? Our guests have plenty to say on the issue.
