When Teenagers say No
Manage episode 240065193 series 2293049
In this very personal episode, Irene reflects her experiences and observations of teenagers saying ‘no’ and the importance of seizing the moment when they say ‘yes’ to doing something together.
Childhood is brief in the journey of life and teenagers say ‘no’ most of the time but when you are lucky and get a ‘yes’ then it should be seized and used to create memories and celebrate the incredible people they are becoming.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- In these challenging teenage years, they will say no most of the time because that’s what they are supposed to do.
- In saying ‘no’ because they want to be with their friends, forge new pathways or figure out who they are meant to be they are preparing themselves for their future and us for our new world, a place where we are no longer the centre of their universe.
- Sometimes when we are lucky we get a ‘yes’ and we must make the most of it.
- The time we have with the young people in our lives is incredibly precious.
- When we are teaching them how to be successful, to think in diverse ways and consider different alternatives we need to also think about just spending time with them and allowing them to be just kids.
- It’s about creating memories and spending time together building bridges and strengthening the relationship you have.
- In that time when they are teenagers, when they are finding their feet and trying to work out who they are when they say yes we should grab the opportunity with both hands and relish it.
- It's important to just spend time with them celebrating the people they are growing up to be.
