RIO GRANDE CITY, Texas - Congressman Henry Cuellar has announced $9,436,120 in federal dollars for Union Water Supply Corporation in Rio Grande City.
The project was made possible by the Bureau of Reclamations WaterSMART Drought Response Program, one of the agency’s Drought Resiliency Projects for Fiscal Year 2024.
The grant will enable Union Water Supply Corporation to add a second water source and end its need to lease water from other providers. Cuellar said this will increase drought resilience, create jobs, and foster further growth for Starr County.
In his remarks, Cuellar spoke about Mexico’s water debt to the United States.
Among those attending the event were Starr County Commissioner for Precinct 3, Eloy Garza, Starr County Sheriff Rene Fuentes, Marelene Mendoza Mendoza-De La Torre, the UWSC Board President, Cynthia Garcia Chapa. Th UWSC Board Vice President, Encarnacion Saenz III, the UWSC Board Secretary/Treasurer, Francisco Chapa III, a UWSC Board Member, Alejandro Lee Garza, a UWSC Board Member, and Jorge Bazan the UWSC General Manager.
