Bradley Schurman joins Brian for a virtual conversation from Washington, D.C. He is the author of THE SUPER AGE: DECODING OUR DEMOGRAPHIC DESTINY as well as the founder and CEO of Super Age, a global research and advisory firm, that counsels clients on workforce recruitment and retention, inclusive design, and marketing and communication strategies.

Bradley is an expert on demographic change and how it disrupts social, cultural, political, and economic norms across the United States and around the world.

He’s written for Newsweek, been quoted by Esquire, Car and Driver, The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and USAToday. He has also briefed NATO and the U.S. Department of Defense on aging populations and demographic topics.

In this episode, Brian and Bradley discuss the seismic changes in demography that are affecting the future of our economies and societies.

Topics include:

  • Defining the Super Age and why it is such a critical time in the life of a nation and its people
  • Shifting demographics, primarily around decreased birth rates and increased human longevity.
  • The Politics of Russia and Ukraine – the geopolitics of declining birth rates as a reason for the invasion.
  • Representational changes – monocultural areas of the US versus cosmopolitan areas such as California vs North Dakota.
  • Gen Z has a radically different in outlook than past generations
  • People of the next generation losing faith in liberal democratic structures – a breeding ground for authoritarianism.
  • Emerging technologies such as AI, people consider this a threat but the future is more human-assisted technology. How did people learn from changing technology before?
  • How getting older and younger people back into the workforce can solve economic problems.
  • How are decreasing birth rates and increased life expectancy impacting the workforce?

Plus, Brian quizzes Bradley about a few regions of the world we should keep our eye on in the next decade or two.
