Join Colby College Professor Joshua Urich and Pam Salokangas, Colby College Assoc. Director of Engagement for their discussion about Explorer George Waymouth's visit in 1605 to what would become the Maine coast. A marker was placed on Allen Island in 1605; it was replaced with a marble cross in 1905, commemorating the 300th anniversary of Waymouth's visit to what would become Allen Island--part of Colby's Island Campus.

We discuss religion at that time, how that exploratory visit marked an opportunity to claim that land for England, the interactions of Waymouth with the indigenous people who were living in the area, and how the cross does not represent the first religious service in North America, as it has been couched by travel writers and others.

Josh and I discuss his various explorations through his religious studies research and how he landed at Colby College.
