**SOUL UNLIMITED Radioshow 617**
In this episode, we go on another little musical journey around the world. To kick things off, there’s a short round of songs inspired by Latin American rhythms. The first release highlight I’d like to introduce to you is the latest Analog Africa compilation “Super Disco Pirata”, which is dedicated to the musical phenomenon of Mexican sonideros and pirata records. These bootlegs contained tracks manipulated and pitched down with equalizers, so-called rebajadas, which were optimized for the sonideros through this processing. The sonideros were sound engineers who dominated the Mexican dance party scene with their mobile sound systems. They mainly played music from Colombia, Peru and Ecuador. Pirato bootlegs became a key element of sonidero culture. The compilation “Super Disco Pirata” is an excellent addition to the compilation “Saturno 2000”, which was released in 2022 and was dedicated to sonidero culture and the rebajadas.
Current music with references to Latin American sounds, including from Colombia, is provided by the French band project The Bongo Hop. This was initiated by Etienne Sevet, who lived in Colombia for a long time and has now settled in Lyon. On the new album “La Pata Coja”, the band’s Afro-jazz approach is even more pronounced than on previous albums. The songs have soul and are danceable. In addition to numerous guest appearances by well-known musicians, singer Nidia Gongora is also back. Overall, I think the album is very successful and, above all, very varied.
I was eagerly awaiting the Hoodna Orchestra’s new album because they have teamed up with ethio-jazz legend Mulatu Astatke. His enchanting vibraphone playing and the wind-heavy power of the Hoodna Orchestra form a magnificent symbiosis. Neil Sugarman (Daptone Records) is also involved in this album and he produced the album together with guitarist Ilan Smilan. I think this album is fabulous and it is the Hoodna Orchestra’s best album to date.
The duo Dar Disku brings completely new aspects to their music. The two DJ’s, producers and musicians were born in Bahrain and now live in London. Their multicultural influences, including their Arabic background, are channeled into their music. The interplay with electronic grooves creates interesting and danceable music. One song also features the legendary Indian singer Asha Putli. Very nice!
The label Soundway Records has released the highly interesting compilation “Aye Ke Disco”. It presents music from the countries around the South China Sea that was created in the 1970s and 80s. The compilation was compiled by Alice Whittington, the label manager of Soundway Records for many years. She is also active as DJ Norsicaa and is known for the eclectic range of her DJ sets. She has an extensive collection of Asian records from which she has selected ten rare tracks with disco funk, psych funk, city pop and Hindustani-Arabic rhythms for “Aye Ke Disco”. A harmonious and highly interesting selection. Great!
Finally, I would like to introduce you to the debut album by Joi N’Juno. The man behind this project is David Baluteau, who is best known as the founder and singer of the French band “La Phaze”. His new project takes him in a new musical direction and his debut album “Samemala” shines with great and extremely danceable songs that combine Afro-Caribbean vibes with strong house beats. It sounds great and is great fun! Have fun listening to this episode!
