Known worldwide for his contributions to the iconic group Peter, Paul and Mary, Yarrow helped shape the 1960s folk music scene. Their self-titled debut album, “Peter, Paul and Mary,” became an immediate success, achieving double platinum status. The group’s timeless hits, including “If I Had a Hammer,” “Puff (The Magic Dragon),” “Blowin’ in the Wind,” and “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” remain influential to this day.
Their enduring legacy was chronicled in Jim Brown’s acclaimed PBS documentary, “50 Years with Peter, Paul and Mary.”
Beyond music, Yarrow was a passionate advocate for social justice. He participated in pivotal moments of the Civil Rights Movement, including marching alongside Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, Alabama.
Over the years, he lent his voice to anti-war and anti-nuclear movements and supported initiatives like Occupy Wall Street.
In addition to his activism, Yarrow explored other creative avenues. He produced three CBS television specials inspired by his beloved song “Puff (The Magic Dragon)” and appeared as a leftist intellectual in Noah Baumbach’s 2015 film, “While We’re Young.”
