It’s useful to think of identity as a process

“it’s useful to think of identity as a process.

Less as a quality or an attribute and more as a process.

Think less of identity and more of a process of identification.

This is multi dimensional . never final and never settled.”

Be aware of the differences between groups and categories

“I’m trying to characterise group membership in this way as something people choose for themselves.

You can say, well you can’t choose your family, you can’t always choose your team.

I agree, but you can choose what belonging to that family means to you.”

Pay attention to how people perform their identity

“This idea of being and becoming was addressed by a personal example of the author as a teenager learning to play the guitar.

Playing the guitar and being a guitarist aren’t the same thing.”
