The Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) is one of Mexico's most powerful and dangerous criminal organizations. Formed in 2010 as a splinter group of the Sinaloa Cartel, it quickly rose to prominence under the leadership of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as "El Mencho."
Key Points:
  1. Origins and Growth:
    • CJNG was originally part of the Sinaloa Cartel but split off after the death of Ignacio "Nacho" Coronel, a top Sinaloa leader.
    • The group initially positioned itself as a vigilante organization, fighting against the Los Zetas cartel. However, it soon expanded its operations to include a wide range of criminal activities.
  2. Criminal Activities:
    • The CJNG is involved in drug trafficking, particularly methamphetamine, heroin, and fentanyl. They have established extensive smuggling routes into the United States and other countries.
    • The cartel is also engaged in kidnapping, extortion, money laundering, and arms trafficking.
  3. Violence and Terror Tactics:
    • CJNG is notorious for its extreme violence and use of terror tactics. They have carried out numerous assassinations, bombings, and massacres to maintain control over territories and intimidate rivals and authorities.
    • The cartel often posts videos of their violent acts on social media to spread fear and demonstrate their power.
  4. Leadership:
    • Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, "El Mencho," is the leader of CJNG and one of the most wanted men in Mexico and the United States. Despite numerous attempts to capture him, he remains elusive.
    • El Mencho's ability to evade capture has contributed to the cartel's continued dominance.
  5. Territorial Control:
    • CJNG operates in several Mexican states, including Jalisco, Michoacán, Veracruz, and Colima. They have also extended their influence to other countries in Latin America and Europe.
    • The cartel has clashed with other criminal organizations, such as the Sinaloa Cartel and Los Zetas, over control of drug routes and territories.
  6. International Impact:
    • CJNG's drug trafficking operations have had a significant impact on the opioid crisis in the United States, particularly through the distribution of fentanyl.
    • The cartel has also established connections with criminal organizations in other countries, further extending its reach.
  7. Law Enforcement Response:
    • Both Mexican and U.S. authorities have made CJNG a top priority. The U.S. has offered multi-million dollar rewards for information leading to the capture of El Mencho and other top leaders.
    • Despite several high-profile arrests, including members of El Mencho's family, the cartel continues to operate with considerable influence and power.
