Episode 6 - The Story, Act 1: Creation
Manage episode 311669391 series 3164657
This episode kicks off a 6 episode series focusing on The Story of the Bible as told through a six act structure: Creation, Fall, Israel, Jesus, the Church, and the Consummation. This episode focuses on the first act, Creation, covering the Genesis 1 and 2 ideal where God's presence permeates, as well as establishing the human vocation (both things that will be tracked in particular throughout this series).
After intros and a coffee segment that you don't want to miss (0:00-5:14), the guys introduce the six act structure and how we can use this structure to read and understand the grand story of the Bible better (5:15-9:07). They talk briefly about why we are using these six acts in particular, and how this structure provides the macro level view of the story (9:08-10:00). Next, they discuss why Genesis 1 and 2 are so crucial to the story, instead of them just being arbitrary beginnings to the Bible. They discuss what purpose Genesis 1 and 2 serve in the story, and how they paint an ideal for the world. They also discuss how the garden was good, but not perfect, as the goal of the creation project is to move forward and take it somewhere (10:01-13:50). They then talk about the difference between Genesis 1 and 2, and how chapter two establishes the functionality of the blessing that was given in Genesis 1 (13:51-16:20). Next, they shift into talking about the Garden of Eden and whether it is a place that can actually be found (16:21-21:10). They then discuss the human vocation as laid out in Genesis 1 and 2, and what it means to rule and reign. They also talk about why humans are called to partner with God in the creation project, and how this partnership sets the stage for the rest of the story of the Bible as God sees His original plan through (21:11-29:16). Entering into a conversation about the Kingdom of God, they talk briefly about heaven and the overlap between heaven and earth in Genesis 1 and 2 (29:17-35:00). They round off their discussion talking about how the human vocation is a priestly vocation, how we can fulfill our human vocation in our lives today by reflecting God, and what Act 1 says about God (35:01-46:01). Finally, they conclude by summarizing Act 1 and giving examples of how the Act 1 ideal looks like nowadays (46:02-52:38).
