Can credit replace lost dividends?

2020 has seen term deposit rates fall below 1% and dividend cuts hit the core sources of income of most investors. The lasting impacts of the pandemic means that the high yields of the past will likely take some time to return, whilst central bank policy suggests interest rates may not increase for several years. In this environment, where should investors be looking for income? The Australian corporate bond and credit sector has seen substantial growth in recent years and may be the solution. The combination of legislated, rather than discretionary, interest payments and security over a business’ assets has seen institutional investors flock to the sector.
