This week on Womanity-Women in Unity, Dr. Amaleya Goneos-Malka talks to Prof. Fortunate Silinda, who is the Chair of the Psychology Department at UNISA.

As the world marks World Mental Health Day (10th October), Prof. Silinda shares her journey into the field of psychology, driven by a desire to unlock human potential and address the often-overlooked psychological challenges in her community.

Prof. Silinda’s sense of community is echoed in her work with the Winning Youth Foundation, which addresses education and social needs in historically disadvantaged schools.

Her research focuses on understanding social and psychological factors influencing undergraduate students to complete of their degrees. We delve into her ongoing study on the psychological effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly focusing on South African youth. Prof. Silinda highlights the gender-specific impacts on young women in traditionally male-dominated industries. She shares some practical strategies to enhance general well-being from her “Tools for Wellbeing” study, including tips on establishing routines, using meditation to manage anxiety, staying connected to peers and family members, setting realistic goals, taking breaks, engaging in physical activity and spending time in the sunshine.

Prof. Silinda discusses the diverse career options available to female psychology graduates and emphasises valuable transferrable skills that they acquire during their studies, such as critical thinking, communication and problem-solving. She reminds women to believe in themselves and their potential and not to let anyone tell them otherwise.
