We're going to pick up with Part Two of, “Find Your Iron”. I introduced this concept in our last module, the old biblical phrase, “Iron Sharpens Iron”. I've always loved that because I do believe it is metaphorical for the people that we surround ourselves with. I want you to think about two very different places. The reality here in this country, and really all around the world, is that people are re-emerging into the sunlight out of this pandemic, in very different emotional states. I will tell you Rooftop Nation, our ability to know and to read that human terrain, and to lead in this time, is super important. I'm sharing this with you because I learned this lesson the hard way in Afghanistan during the first 10 years I was there. I moved around that country like many of my other peers, with very little knowledge about what the last 40 years had been like for the folks that lived in those villages. It was not until we started to spend quality time in those communities, that I was able to see the miles they had run and the scars they had endured. When I was relatable to their pain and relevant to their goals, when I was able to see the pictures in their head and they knew it, that's when things started to happen. I'm telling you as we emerge from this crisis, how we listen, how we connect as human beings is really going to affect whether or not we survive or thrive. “Don’t Get Burned”. Hey, Rooftop Nation. Last week, we were talking about emotion, and the question that I posed to you was how much does emotion affect your life? How much does it affect your day-to-day? I made a compelling case for you to consider, that emotion, is a big part of our life. Regardless of how sophisticated we think we are, how modern we think we are, emotion can drive us. No matter how much we train, when the brain experiences a perceived threat or needs the body to take an action, we're going to feel an emotion. There's a lot of people who believe we are thinking creatures who feel, but the reality is, we are feeling creatures who think. Emotions are part of who we are. The fact of the matter is humans are emotional creatures. We are meaning seeking, emotional, creatures. We always have been, and we always will be. As million-dollar consultant Alan Wise says, “Logic makes people think, but emotion makes people act.” And that action is both in the positive and in the negative. If you’ve worked with me for more than a day, you know that I’m always talking about how as humans in this modern world we’re like an iceberg. Twenty percent of who we are is above the waterline, and that’s that modern world we live in, with meetings and cashflow reports, and soccer games for the kids. But there’s another eighty percent that’s down below the water line of that iceberg and that’s what sunk Titanic, because there was this hubris or arrogance of not paying attention to what was below the water line. That’s the same for us. The fact of the matter is we are emotional creatures. How do we use this knowledge to manage our emotional temperature, our “mindset” if you will, and that of those around us?
