After a week's hiatus from the podcast, I’m back! What a week it has been, I went through a situation with my car being broken into and dealing with that for multiple days. I did record a podcast, and as promised, it went into detail about my 5-month long travel journey, but I’ve got to be honest, I didn’t love the content! So, I started over fresh this week with a topic that I’ve been thinking about recently: The pressure we put on our children.
I’m from Texas and if you don’t know, sports matter here! My children, nieces, and nephews were involved in high-level sports from a young age. I’ve been thinking back and although, I don’t regret (and neither do they) putting my children in sports, there are a couple of things I would have done differently.
In this episode I discuss:
- Personal experience with children in sports;
- The pressure we put on our children to perform;
- “Sports Parents”;
- Prioritizing winning over the love of the game;
- The energy, time, and money that went into sports teams;
- How playing in high-level sports creates a constant environment of competition and the need to win;
- Why we should let kids be kids
My kids never asked to be taken out of their respective sports. They loved playing, but in retrospect, I think I could have balanced out their “team time” with “kid time”. In today’s world- the expectations and pressure we put on children is insane. I hope that as time passes, the priority to win will be less than having fun and enjoying childhood.
Stay tuned next for next week, as I’ll be back on the road and joining you from Bend, OR!
