As of February 2021, Montana no longer requires a permit to legally carry a concealed handgun in public. This means Montanans can now discreetly carry a handgun without a background check. Like the episode “24 Hours at the Golden Apple,” where “This American Life” reporters and producers completed shifts interviewing patrons and employees at a Chicago diner, the Montana Kaimin was inspired to find the “Golden Apple” of our college town. This is because the land is considered privately locked, also called corner locked. On February 24th, 2023, University of Montana dorm and office building, Aber Hall, flooded. A pipe had burst on the top floor. Students were quickly evacuated from Aber and not allowed to return. They were relocated until the building was cleaned up and deemed safe again. Locally Grown: PEAs farm teaches students the ins and outs of farming in their own community 10:43

The PEAS Farm is a 10 acre farm in the Rattlesnake just about ten minutes from the University of Montana. They grow everything from pears to garlic, and call themselves home to some pigs and many chickens. The farm is a part of Garden City Harvest, a local non-profit that donates food to organizations like the Food Bank and UM Pantry. Students at UM are offered an internship through the program to teach them all about local farming. An overnight epidemic: Fentanyl overdose in Montana up 1100% in last four years 11:56

Since 2017, fentanyl overdose has gone up more than 1,000% in Montana. Students for Sensible Drug Policy, a service organization focused on harm reduction, educates students at UMT on how to take drugs and avoid overdose safely. A Kaimin Q&A with UM President Seth Bodnar 33:08

It’s been a hell of a year at the University of Montana. Over the last two semesters, students protested misogynistic and racist professors, worked to oust law school leadership for bungled Title IX complaints, set record attendance at Washington-Grizzly Stadium, boosted UM to its first overall enrollment increase in a decade and shook off the dust of the COVID-19 pandemic. UM President Seth Bodnar, a corporate executive and special forces commander-turned-education administrator, was at the center of many of the issues that mattered to students this year. In a February opinion piece he wrote, “Our job as leaders in higher education is not to quell dissent or resolve debate, but rather to sponsor that spark within our students.” In that spirit, Bodnar agreed to sit for an interview with the Kaimin, answering our questions and questions solicited from students on the Oval and in the University Center. The U.S. Forest Service says that, while people of color make up 40% of the population, nearly 70% of visitors to public lands are white. As mask mandate ends, UM profs report mental health decline 20:04

As COVID-19 cases plunge in Missoula from an Omicron peak in early February, the University of Montana is making big changes to its long-standing pandemic policies. As of March 3, students and staff are no longer required to wear masks indoors. While the change may mark a turning point in the pandemic, the effects of COVID-19 adaptations are lingering. In a recent survey of UM professors by the University Faculty Association, nearly 90% reported a negative impact to their mental health during the pandemic. Prior to Monte, UM had had few long-term mascots, and even some disastrous stints with live bears. Are we asking too much of our dorm RAs? 23:25

In late 2021, a letter circulated among University of Montana administration, students and media outlets containing a plea for help. It said the resident assistants living and working in the dorms need more support. Alex Crisp, a former RA, wrote the letter following a series of incidents in UM's Jesse Hall that led him to quit the position early. He cited, "Ridiculous hours, unsafe conditions, toxic work circles and manipulative overseers" as examples of the challenges he faced. And he's not alone. Missoula College student and mother-of-three Nereyda Calero says it felt like her world was ending when the Trump administration announced in 2017 it would rescind the "Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals" program, or "DACA." Still Dreaming: How a student found her voice fighting for DACA 21:45

Nearly 10 years ago, former President Barack Obama announced a program designed to protect undocumented immigrants brought into the United States as children. The policy — Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or "DACA," — went into place in June 2012. By 2020, more than 600,000 former childhood arrivals had secured protection from deportation and the ability to work in the United States. But the policy faced numerous legal and executive challenges over the years that fueled a vocal nationwide movement of DACA recipients fighting for the rights of other dreamers. Maria Bustos retired last semester along with 15 other professors in the University of Montana's College of Humanities and Sciences. After a more than 30-year career, she decided to step down from her tenured position in the Spanish department and enjoy time with her loved ones — that, and the University offered her an early retirement package. Title IX questions linger amid UM law school fallout 22:23

In late September, the Daily Montanan reported that a cohort of students in UM's Alexander Blewitt III School of Law said the school's deans had discouraged them from reporting sexual misconduct to the Title IX office on campus. Following the report and backlash from students who walked out of the school in protest, Associate Dean Sally Weaver and Dean Paul Kirgis resigned from their positions. But the resignations raise questions about the present and future of Title IX investigations at the University and whether or not a resignation spells the end of an investigation.
