What is your image of a salesperson? Perhaps you associate them with a pushy car salesman who uses manipulative techniques. Or maybe you picture someone who—even if they don't work as a salesperson—has a natural gift for persuasion and can always sway people to their side. We often imagine that selling is a skill you're born with. And while I do believe that a certain type of personality can make the transition to selling easier—like being extroverted, courageous, or energized by talking to people—the truth is, that's just a small part of the process. It's helpful, sure, but honestly, it's an insignificant piece of the puzzle when you truly understand what sales is all about.
