This week on EYE ON NPI we're looking at a bright and sunny new product, this week it's the Vishay VEML6046X00 RGBIR Color Sensor (https://www.digikey.com/short/t3jhhdt1) an inexpensive way to add RGB + IR sensing with I2C to your next product. This sensor is the latest from Vishay, well known for their light sensing expertise, and requires no lenses or filters to get started immediately. We've used lots of Vishay sensors in our breakout boards (https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=vishay) so we know they are experts in light sensors, in our experience their products are reliable and easy to use with I2C interfaces that hew closely to the I2C/SMBus specifications without funkiness like clock-stretching or auto-sleep modes. This is the first time we're looking at an RGBIR sensor from them. Traditionally we've leaned on them for infrared or 'clear' light sensing. As expected, the chip contains 4 diode sensors, tuned for red, green, blue and IR light. The sensors are fairly well normalized and characterized, with red at 90% and blue at 70% spectral sensitivity compared to green. What we thought was particularly useful about the VEML6046X00 is it comes with a Lux conversion table - and the Lux ranges up to 176 klux! This is great because it means it won't saturate out even in direct sun, reflected or directed light that would normally be considered 'blinding'. This is the highest lux sensor we've seen since the discontinued MAX44009 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/analog-devices-inc-maxim-integrated/MAX44009EDT-T/2606393) which was the previous max of 188 klux. This sensor would be a good alternative with minimal work required to 'port' the firmware over. Speaking of firmware, the sensor communicates over I2C, much like most light sensors that don't need high speed. There's also an IRQ pin out for automatically triggering when going over or under a light level. The I2C register map is blessedly short, and there's an ID register so you can be sure you have the right sensor connected. Otherwise it's fairly similar to the other sensors we've used: you can probably whip up a library to do readings in a day or two - check Vishay's app note for integration for extra tips on how to initialize and read sensor data (https://www.vishay.com/docs/80410/designingveml6046x00.pdf) Or you can use Vishay's VEML6046X00 software library (https://www.vishay.com/docs/80546/veml6046x00_software_libraries.zip). Intrigued? You can pick up the Vishay VEML6046X00 RGBIR Color Sensor (https://www.digikey.com/short/t3jhhdt1) from DigiKey right now! It's in stock and tariff-free which makes it a great deal for a quality RGBIR lux sensor. We're also going to be looking at turning this into a breakout board. Until then, order now for immediate delivery, so you can spend more time in the sunshine and less time adding lux and color sensing to your next product.…

Since this is the topic of the day, we'll be looking at how to purchase an item from DigiKey with tariffs in mind. DigiKey is a free trade zone, which means that if you're not in the USA, you will not have to pay additional tariffs on goods that are re-exported. However, for USA destinations, the new tariffs can add a significant cost if the component has its last manufacturing step in China.…

For our RP2350 Bones boards, we might not use the built-in DC/DC converter on some variants—and it's not required! We could use an external 1.1V regulator, if it can source 200mA. This affects low-power usage, but that might not be important in some cases. If we can source a tiny regulator, this could shave a bit of space off. New RP2350 chips are here, and we're building fresh "Bones" boards—starting with the Adalogger RP2350. We also fixed Sparkle Motion's power issue and designed a Stick version. Plus, we're exploring tiny 1.1V regulators to optimize future boards.

This week's EYE ON NPI is Pretty Sweet Of Course! It's the Infineon Technologies PSOC Control C3 Microcontroller Line (https://www.digikey.com/short/8cw3wpp8) a souped-up microcontroller that is a perfect choice for engineers who need to do some motor control while also managing buttons, LEDs, displays, and other product requirements all on one chip. With a the high-speed ADCs on board, you can manage your BLDC motors and handle the feedback loop in firmware for dynamic tuning without the expense of a specialized co-processor. The PSOC Control C3 series comes in two flavors, the Entry and Main line chips (https://www.infineon.com/cms/en/product/microcontroller/32-bit-psoc-arm-cortex-microcontroller/32-bit-psoc-control-arm-cortex-m33-mcu/psoc-control-c3m/). Both are based on the Arm Cortex M33 which means you know that your CMSIS-based code will be an easy compile and you can use existing pre-compiled libraries. The M33 line is an upgrade to the M3 and M4, giving you the same or better clock speeds and FPU/DSP commands you get with the M4 plus TrustZone and better power efficiency. The Entry line runs at 100MHz, with max 256k Flash 64K SRAM, 10-bit DAC, a 6 MSPS 12-bit ADC, 16 x 16-bit + 4 x 32-bit TCPWMs and a "CORDIC math coprocessor". The Main line can run at 180MHz, same Flash/SRAM and TCPWMs, and has a 12 MSPS ADC plus 4-channel HRPWM with less than 100ps resolution. Both come in 48 and 64 pin TQFP/QFN varieties, the Main line also has an 80-pin version. (There will also apparently be a Performance line, so far un-announced, which may offer more memory / higher frequency). Both have FPU/DSP support, so you'll be able to process the 6 or 12-MSPS ADC data quickly. And the CORDIC processor (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CORDIC) optimizes trig functions like sin/cos/tan/ln so you don't need lookup tables for performing these floating point calculations. These are particularly useful when handling motor motion calculations since they are often sinusoidal and we need to convert to-and-from the ADC measurements to the precision PWM timers. There's a huge selection of Arm processors out there, but the PSOC Control C3 has the best peripherals for motor control: it's rare to see 12MSPS 12-Bit ADC plus so many 16-bit and 32-bit timers with high-speed PWM. The CORDIC co-processor especially will make managing BLDC or Stepper motors a breeze. Plus you still get all the peripherals you would expect of a microcontroller: I2C, UART, SPI, CAN bus, DAC, IRQs, and lots of GPIO. That means you can handle all the other stuff your product has to do while also managing the motor in the background, saving you lots of space and money in BOM costs and fewer integration woes when trying to communicate between a main processor and a motor-control co-processor. The KITPSC3M5EVK eval board (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/infineon-technologies/KITPSC3M5EVK/25880112) is in stock right now if you want a ready-to-go kit at a good price. It comes with 'Arduino shield compatible" pinouts plus a USB / debug interface, and MikroBus connector for expansion. You can also pick up just the bare chip - for example the PSC3M5FDS2ACQ1AQSA1 (https://www.digikey.com/short/8cw3wpp8) is a fancy version with 256K of flash, the 12 Msps ADC, and hall encoder in a TQFP-64 package. It's in stock now at DigiKey for immediate shipment! Order today and you can have a powerful microcontroller with excellent motor feedback control in your hands by tomorrow morning.…

This week was slow for hardware development—we were getting over being under the weather. But we did poke a little at a PCM5122 breakout board (https://www.digikey.com/short/fnf9t0b1). This chip can do software or hardware control of I2S signals and is preferred by folks who want something a little nicer than the PCM5102 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6250). We also wrapped up our design for the 8x solenoid driver board—the biggest update is adding indicator LEDs. Lastly, we got our prototypes for the "USB CC Fixer" adapter, which we mostly made so we could charge a really annoying baby monitor, but probably other folks will want to buy it, too. ----------------------------------------- Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------…
We've been putting a lot of I2S DACs in the shop, like the PCM5102 (https://www.digikey.com/short/fnf9t0b1) and TLV320DAC3100 (https://www.digikey.com/short/wj2d8w2h), and working on more like the PCM5122 (https://www.digikey.com/short/fnf9t0b1). What we'd really like is an I2S speaker amplifier that is preferably stereo and can do more than 5W—e.g., a cross between the MAX98357 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/3006) and MAX9744 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1752). Let's see what we can find! Testing a PCM5122 I2S DAC, adding LEDs to the 8x solenoid driver, and prototyping a "USB CC Fixer" to charge a tricky baby monitor. Also we're on the hunt for a stereo I2S amp with 5W+ output.

For this week's EYE ON NPI, we'll Hazard a guess that you'll be excited to see the Raspberry Pi RP2350 chip available for purchase at Digi-Key for integration into your next design. We've been working with this chip for a few months and it's quickly becoming our favorite Arm Cortex chip, with fun peripherals and a well-supported toolchain. It also is one of the first mass-produced RISC-V chips: one that you can buy and start using for trying out RISC-V development without the 'risc' of worrying you may have picked the wrong core. Available in two chip sizes and with a boost in performance and peripherals, the RP2350 (https://www.digikey.com/short/mzpjhptm) represents a big upgrade to the RP2040 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/raspberry-pi/SC0914-13/14306010) that you've seen take over the microcontroller world over the last 4 years. Raspberry Pi is famous for their single board computers (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/single-board-computers-sbcs/933) so much so that they created a full market for sub-$100 all-in-one PCs. The big disruption we feel they brought to the market was the creation of a hackable and open-source ecosystem with good main-line OS and driver support. With well-written documentation and up-to-date Linux software, purchasing a Pi meant you got to join in with a community that was having fun, not struggling with compiling out-of-tree kernel modules and closed-source firmware. So in 2021 when they announced the RP2040, folks were interested: could a SBC maker design low power silicon? Turns out, yes! The RP2040 was a fun dual-core 133 MHz Cortex-M0+ processor, with 264K of SRAM, with a satisfying collection of peripherals: USB, ADC, UART/SPI/I2C, PWM, DMA and timers plus the nifty PIO state machine (https://www.raspberrypi.com/news/what-is-pio/). The killer feature, though, was the price: at $1 a chip, and tons of availability with an on-going chip shortage, the RP2040 won our hearts and soldering stations! Three years later, Raspberry Pi is back with a sequel: The RP2350A (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/microcontrollers/685?s=N4IgTCBcDaIE4AcwGYCsAGAgiAugXyA) and RP2350B (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/microcontrollers/685?s=N4IgTCBcDaIE4AcwGYCsAGAQiAugXyA) two variants of an upgrade chip that keeps what was great about the '2040 but with some boosts. First up, the core was upgraded from dual Cortex-M0's to the M33: this means you get an FPU and better low-power performance, plus TrustZone security. The core is spec'd for 150MHz but we've overclocked it to 264MHz without too much complaint. You also have the option to get dual RISC-V cores (https://riscv.org/) instead. SRAM was also bumped: from 264K to 520KB. This is great for running interpreted languages like MicroPython (https://micropython.org/) or CircuitPython (https://circuitpython.org/). Like the original, the RP2350 does not have any built in FLASH memory. Instead, you will need to wire it to a QSPI flash memory chip (https://www.digikey.com/short/80t4zt5t). This way you can pick from 1 MBytes to 16 MBytes whatever your code size needs. This new chip adds the ability to wire in PSRAM (https://www.digikey.com/short/d8033bfw) to the same QSPI bus plus an extra chip select. This is not going to be nearly as fast as on-chip SRAM, but it's great when you want large working memory that the chip will manage for you: by configuring it in the CMakefile, you 'magically' get a huge area you can malloc. Another improvement is in the number of PIO blocks: the original had 2, the RP2350 has 3. The two biggest new features we found are the new HSTX peripheral and the 80-QFN RP2350B (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/microcontrollers/685?s=N4IgTCBcDaIE4AcwGYCsAGAQiAugXyA) variant. HSTX stands for High Speed Transmission and its a high-speed peripheral that can drive 8 output lines - note that it's output only! There's a few possible use cases, but the core reasoning is that this lets you control a DVI display directly from the chip using just the DMA and internal memory without requiring overclocking, PIO, or an extra core. Note that the built in SRAM limits the size of the display if you want to have a video buffer: you can do 320x240 @16bpp or 640x480 @8bpp but, still! Second, if you found the original QFN-60 a bit constraining in terms of GPIO, the QFN-80 'B' version has 20 extra GPIO available for just 10 cents more. If you've been doing grabby-hands in hopes of getting a reel of RP2350 chips into your next design: today is your lucky day! Digi-Key has these chips in stock RIGHT NOW for immediate shipment. You can get a reel of either A or B type chips, with cut tape individual components coming shortly. Both types are great, but recently we've been having a lot of fun with the roomy B type (https://www.digikey.com/short/mzpjhptm), with the extra GPIO. Order today and you can start integrating the trendiest new silicon into your new PCB assembly by tomorrow afternoon.…

Build a 3D printed Bluetooth speaker, inspired by the TV Show Severance. Powered by the Feather ESP32 V2 and the MAX98357A 3W I2S amplifier. This project is written in Arduino and uses two libraries by Phil Schatzmann that make using the ESP32 for Bluetooth audio really easy. Great for playing defiant jazz, watching your favorite TV show, or sync with your mobile device. Just please don't throw it at your coworkers, as it may cause a nasty bump to the head. Full tutorial: https://learn.adafruit.com/glowing-hair-flowers-with-n00ds/overview Light up your hair with these beautiful iridescent glowing hair flowers. The magical light comes from Adafruit n00ds: a fun, flexible noodle-like LED filament. These little noodles are jam-packed with LEDs and look a bit like EL wire, but with no need for an inverter. They are available in a variety of colors and lengths so you'll be able to find just the right n00d for your project. This is a fun beginner project that requires a little bit of tricky soldering but no coding or software. Just connect the n00ds to a coin cell battery breakout and they will light up and glow. Adafruit n00ds come in a variety of colors and lengths. We also have them in single-ended or double-ended variety. The double-ended variety are a bit easier to solder to: solder a wire to each end. The single-ended variety have both leads on one end, which is perfect for some projects where you don't want to have to double back to the battery, but these are wicked hard to solder to. For these hair flowers I used the 300mm single-ended n00ds in red, blue, and warm white. https://www.adafruit.com/product/6150 Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------…

For our next design of the Fruit Jam board, we want to design a top plate that will let the header strip and switch poke out. This means we also have to choose buttons that will be able to poke out, so that they can be pressed when the plate is in place. Measuring the header height, it's 8.5mm tall, so we want 6mm x 6mm SMT tactile switches with more than 8.5mm actuator height from PCB (but no more than 11mm). Let’s see what is available at Digi-Key! For our next revision of Fruit Jam (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6200), we want to add an onboard speaker to provide some sound beeps and boops. The amplifier we're using can drive 4 or 8-ohm speakers, up to a couple watts—but we're not expecting hi-fi sound here. Most important is something that is solderable into the PCB so that it is an "all-in-one" setup. It also has to be less than 0.8" in diameter to fit into the unpopulated area left over on our design. Let's see what we can find at DigiKey! Jepler spent a bunch of time this week working on getting audio working on the pico-umac port https://github.com/jepler/pico-mac/tree/rp2350-fruitjam to Fruit Jam https://www.adafruit.com/product/6200 . Audio on the hardware we're emulating is pretty straightforward: every scanline of the video generator also pops out one byte of PWM data. We have 370 horizontal lines—352 visible and 18 during the vsync—and a 60.15 Hz refresh rate for 22.255 KHz audio approximately. That data is written to $1FD00 http://www.mac.linux-m68k.org/devel/plushw.php . That data is being piped over I2S to the MAX98357 https://www.adafruit.com/product/3006 and to a speaker for now. So, of course, the first thing we have to try out is Dark Castle https://archive.org/details/mac_DarkCastle_1_2 : famous for great audio and being a surprisingly hard game to play! The audio sounds really good though :) Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ ----------------------------------------- #marchintosh #apple #diy…
Ladyada tests final TLV320DAC3100 boards for Fruit Jam, revises the PCB, and explores Jepler’s pico-mac. Also designs a USB-C CC resistor fix board. For the next rev, she hunts an 8-ohm PCB-mount speaker under 0.8" for onboard beeps.

This week's EYE ON NPI is trendy and buzzy, it's Boréas Technologies' BOS1931 High-Efficiency Piezo Driver (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/b/boreas/bos1931-high-efficiency-piezo-driver). This chip is a compact way to add powerful high-voltage piezo drive to any product, combining three chips: power supply, waveform generator and driver. With a complete I2C/I3C interface that you can connect to any microcontroller/processor it's the most advanced all-in-one piezo driver we've seen! Piezo (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piezoelectricity) discs are multi-use devices that convert mechanical movement to electrical signal, and vice-versa. They're most often seen as electrical-to-mechanical converters such as piezo beepers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piezoelectric_speaker) where an AC signal, usually 3 to 6V peak-to-peak square wave, is applied across the disk. The frequency of the wave is translated into a sound frequency. It doesn't have the same fidelity as a magnetic speaker but its much thinner, less expensive for the component and driving circuitry, and for 2 to 4 KHz beeps it's just fine. Piezos can also be used the opposite way, where mechanical stress on the crystal is translated into an electrical signal. In this way it can be used as a switch or force sensor (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piezoelectric_sensor), again usually a few microamperes' worth of current is generated. For these basic uses, your standard microcontroller pin, or at best an H-Bridge will work just fine: you can drive piezo's differentially to get more Vpp across the disc but essentially we're still talking about only a few Volts. There are some times when you want to make a piezo really 'loud' - that is, putting 100+ Volts across the crystal to generate a big mechanical response. This is often not for audible use cases, after all if you wanted to do that you'd just use a magnetic speaker (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1732) that can get to many many Watts of output efficiently. FYI there's two variants of the chip: the BOS1931 (https://www.digikey.com/short/w9tz9tbj) and the BOS1921 (https://www.digikey.com/short/nnb0r29r). The '31 can only do piezo driving. The '21 can do sensing as well as driving, so it can be used for force-feedback products. In this particular EYE ON NPI we'll just be chatting about the driving capabilities of both. So, while we can do basic sensing/beeping with a few Volts - when we want to have significant motion for blasting sonar or moving fluid around we can only increase the movement by increasing the peak-to-peak voltage. Each piezo you buy will have a voltage rating - and you will need a boost converter to generate that peak-to-peak. For the BOS19 series of chips, you can get +-95V so 190Vpp max, which will drive any piezo you find, and you only need 3~5V input thanks to a built-in DC/DC boost converter. Boréas didn't stop there. Not only do you get a booster, but also a full waveform manager with I2C/I3C control. You can can fill up a FIFO buffer with waveform bytes to generate different shapes. There's a sine generator you can control with an envelope creator. Or, you can piece together waveform shapes for different pump/haptic behavior, giving you the customizability of a byte-wise waveform generator with the simplicity of a sine generator. They even have a Haptics Studio' to help you craft the waveform you want (https://www.boreas.ca/pages/haptic-studio). The BOS1931 (https://www.digikey.com/short/w9tz9tbj) and the BOS1921 (https://www.digikey.com/short/nnb0r29r) come in two packages: an easy-to-layout-and-solder QFN and a tiny-and-advanced BGA. Both have the same core so just pick whether you need simplicity or small size. Since its a pretty serious boost converter and driver - the piezo connects directly to the output pins - you'll need to watch your layout. Check the datasheet for their recommended setup to make sure you don't have excessive power loss or EMI. IF you want to get started quickly, the BOS1921-KIT-B01 (https://www.digikey.com/short/v9hn8mcd) evaluation board will let you use their configuration software to quickly determine how your piezo actuator or sensor response to the waveform generator and booster before you start laying out the components on a prototype PCB. If you have some serious piezo-ing you need to get moving, the Boréas Technologies' BOS1931 High-Efficiency Piezo Driver (https://www.digikey.com/short/w9tz9tbj) can do everything from voltage generation, waveform shaping, and differential driving. And best of all it's in stock right now at Digi-Key for immediate shipment! Order today and DigiKey will pick and pack your order in an instant so that you can be vibin' with your fancy new piezo controller by tomorrow afternoon.…

Browsing HyperCard stacks on our RP2350-based Fruit Jam 🍏📂 With a little more tweaking, we've got a nice big 12MB disk image loading into our Pico-Mac port https://github.com/jepler/pico-mac/tree/rp2350-fruitjam to the Fruit Jam https://www.adafruit.com/product/6200 — that 16MB of internal flash is coming in super useful now! That means not only can we run System 6 but also install some nice software like HyperCard https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HyperCard ! As kids, we loved playing and making HyperCard stacks, so it's neat to see that we can still navigate the classics on an RP2350. Many stacks have music or sound effects, so we'll revisit these once we get audio playback working. See the Sounds of Classic Mac Audio 🔊🍏 We're working on the Pico-Mac port https://github.com/jepler/pico-mac/tree/rp2350-fruitjam to Fruit Jam https://www.adafruit.com/product/6200 and one thing we really want to add is sound support for classic Mac games and HyperCard stacks. Audio on the hardware we're emulating is pretty straightforward: every scanline of the video generator also outputs one byte of PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) data. We have 370 horizontal lines—352 visible and 18 during the vsync—at a 60.15 Hz refresh rate, producing approximately 22.255 kHz audio. That data is written to memory address $1FD00 http://www.mac.linux-m68k.org/devel/plushw.php so all we have to do now is pipe that 8-bit PWM signal either out to a timer on the RP2350 microcontroller or To the TLV320DAC3100 I²S amplifier onboard Fruit Jam, for that sweet, sweet 'Wild Eep' https://www.facebook.com/adafruitindustries/videos/1873371666122621 Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ ----------------------------------------- #marchintosh #apple #tech…
We grew up with a Mac Plus/512K, so getting the Pico-Mac 68000 emulator https://github.com/evansm7/pico-mac working on Fruit Jam https://www.adafruit.com/product/6200 with 1MB+ of RAM was a high priority for those nostalgic vibes. We've got HSTX DVI output plus PSRAM working https://github.com/jepler/pico-mac/tree/rp2350-fruitjam, which means 4MB RAM—that's the most you could get into a Mac Plus and enough to run System 6! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_6 Please note that System 7.1 was the pinnacle of software design, but System 6 was also pretty good. System 6 had some nifty features, such as the "Extensions" and "Control Panel" system programs, like After Dark with the famous Flying Toasters https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/After_Dark_(software). Note that we're still working on audio, so you can see the high byte of the memory space used for audio that we've mapped into the video RAM for visualization. http://www.mac.linux-m68k.org/devel/plushw.php has more details on how that works - its 8-bit PWM audio reads "one byte per scanline." We'll have that output on the I2S DAC for speaker or headphone output. The FruitJam board has an RP2350, dual USB ports over PIO, DVI output from HSTX, and the ability to emulate some classic computers. In this demo, we're using it with the Mac 128K-But-With-384K-Instead https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macintosh_128K It's not quite a 512K or Mac Plus—which had 1 MB of RAM—but it does have the same 68000 core and is running a Mac Plus ROM, so once we get PSRAM going, we could easily expand to much more RAM. Right now, we can run Finder 5.1 and test out the mouse and keyboard, which both work flawlessly. This is super fun—we can't wait to get some of our favorite old games working! FruitJam is still a work in progress; we have to revise the PCB to fix some errors, but you can sign up here to be notified when we get them in stock https://www.adafruit.com/product/6200 Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ ----------------------------------------- #apple #mac #retro…
We're testing out an I2C-to-solenoid driver today. It uses an MCP23017 expander. We like this particular chip for this usage because it has push-pull outputs, making it ideal for driving our N-channel FETs and flyback diodes. The A port connects to the 8 drivers, while the B port remains available for other GPIO purposes. For this demo, whenever we 'touch' a pin on port B to ground, the corresponding solenoid triggers provide an easy way to check speed and power usage. Having worked on some u-blox GNSS prototypes this week, we decided to figure out what module to check out next. Let's see which u-blox GNSS modules are available that are fast to work with—specifically, those with built-in patch antennas so you can pop them on and start receiving immediately. We'll also take a look at some other options for those willing to connect an external antenna. This week, we were all over the place with a bunch of different designs and experiments. After last week's analysis of the TLV320DAC3100, we made some updates to the design and re-booked prototype PCBs. We also designed a triple-matrix bonnet: with our latest work on getting HUB75 RGB matrices working on the Raspberry Pi 5, we can now do matrix control on the latest Pi 5 chip. But we're limited by the RP1 chip, so to get big displays going, we'll need multiple strands—these don't use significantly more bandwidth because half of the pins are shared. Finally, we ended the week by getting another older prototype working: the SAM-M8Q is an entry-level all-in-one GPS from u-blox. It comes with both UART and I2C interfaces, plus a built-in antenna, so it's ready to go out of the box. The NMEA interface is trivial, but we also wanted to try out the UBX interface, and thankfully, Claude 3.7 was able to vibe-code it for us in a jiffy.…

We're working on getting some fun emulators ported to the FruitJam https://www.adafruit.com/product/6200. Of course, we wanted to start with the C64, so when we found the MCUME https://github.com/Jean-MarcHarvengt/MCUME emulator project with many retro machines already done and ported to popular microcontrollers, we got right to checking it out! Here, Jepler is testing out the C64 with video output on HSTX. Next up is the keyboard, but for now, it's fun to test out the famous 10 print... goto 10 script https://10print.org and watch the vibes generate. Heeeey, we're just having a super chill vibe here at the desk of Ladyada—writing a driver for the uBlox M8Q https://blog.adafruit.com/2024/09/10/a-mini-gps-from-ublox-with-i2c-and-uart/ which has both I2C and UART interfaces. As expected, it can do everyday NMEA output, but it can also do UBX, a "compressed" protocol for advanced data reads and writes over I2C/UART—or even SPI on some other chips. However, the UBX protocol is a hugely complex driver to implement, with dozens of commands and hundreds of flags. But why stress when you can viiiibe? We're using this beast of a spec as an excuse to try out the new Claude 3.7, which is doing great at chomping through the UBX documentation roughage and giving us some nice code on the other side. Within an hour, we're able to connect and switch to UBX mode by sending a well-formed message and receiving an ACK. What we like about coding with a good LLM is that it does the work we sometimes get lazy over, like handling various error conditions, timeouts, and verbose error messages. Testing Claude Code, to automate Arduino coding/debugging for Metro & OPT 4048! On the most recent Desk of Ladyada, we shared our experiments with Claude Code, a new large language model (LLM) tool, to streamline hardware development - WAIT WHAT? That's right!. streamline hardware development! We are using it to automate parts of the coding and debugging process for an Arduino-compatible Metro Mini board with an OPT 4048 color sensor. Using Claude Code’s shell access, we can compile, upload, and test code in a semi-automated workflow, allowing the LLM to suggest fixes for errors along the way. The process involves using Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) to bridge hardware interaction gaps, as Claude Code doesn't run natively on Windows yet. While the AI isn’t perfect for high-level driver development, it's proving VERY useful for tedious debugging and super-fast iterative improvements, bringing hardware automation closer to ...reality. #claude #ai #arduino…

Full tutorial: https://learn.adafruit.com/programmable-12v-outdoor-cafe-lights/overview Cafe-style light strands with edison bulbs are a beautiful way to decorate your patio. They are a fantastic and classy way to light up any outdoor space. Wineries, bistros, and night markets use them to create a cozy, intimately lit space that's warm and inviting to diners, and they look fabulous in backyards of just about any size. These lights are a programmable, addressable version of the cafe market lights you can find at the hardware store. Add arduino or CircuitPython code and you can turn your lights on in party mode, sending warm rainbow animations across your yard. These lights require 12v power, and also need to hold up in an outdoor environment. This guide will focus on how to power 12v lights and also show how to use a waterproof enclosure to keep your lights safe from rain and weather. This week's EYE ON NPI is a NAND in the HAND, it's ISSI Serial NAND Flash chips (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/i/issi/serial-nand-flash) available in a variety of sizes and footprints. These are great options for folks that need more data storage on their PCBs, but don't necessarily want an SD card. DigiKey has a selection of 1Gbit and 2Gbit chips, so you have tons of storage for data logs, images, recordings, or even filesystems. And the price is great, you'll pay much less per byte when buying NAND flash There's plenty of times you'll need to access non-volatile memory on your microcontroller: graphics or audio files for a user interface, maps or almanac data for telemetry, sensor or usage logs, interpreted code scripts, firmware updates, security certificates, etc. these files are too big to be stored in simple EEPROM chips (https://www.digikey.com/short/0rf9t7qb) that max out at a few kB. The next step up is to use NOR Flash (https://www.digikey.com/short/jfp3bvph) - you can get up to 256 Megabytes in size! (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/issi-integrated-silicon-solution-inc/IS25LP02GJ-RHLE/24617385) Compared to EEPROM which comes in 1-Wire, I2C or SPI, you definitely have to use an SPI interface for NOR Flash. It's also possible on many chips to have 4-bit-at-a-time QSPI or even 8-bit OSPI interfacing for fast reads. And that's the thing that's really nice about NOR: instant reads of any byte anywhere in memory just like EEPROM. Unlike EEPROM you can't write just one byte at a time anywhere in the storage, you have to write 'page' and erase a 'sector' at a time - each page tends to be about 256 bytes, a sector is often 4KB. That means if you want to update a file, you'll need to read the whole 4K block into a memory cache, change the bytes you want to, then erase and re-write the block out. The good news though is once you write out a page, you can pretty much assume it will stay for many years: there's rarely corrupted data in NOR flash. And, although erasing and writing is a bit of a pain, the instant-access means NOR is great for 'XIP' or other dynamic memory access. If NOR is so great, why bother with NAND? One is cost: a 2MB NOR chip isn't too bad about 45 cents in quantity (https://www.digikey.com/short/zff49fb7) but once you get to the biggest 256 MB ones (https://www.digikey.com/short/vffmp583) the pricing gets high pretty quickly: $15 in tray quantities. Considering you can get a 64G SD card for that price, NOR isn't very cost effective. Second is sizing: if you want 1GB for large files, it just isn't available. For that kind of density you need NOR flash. NAND flash is the kind of flash you get when you buy a USB key or microSD card, although those have USB or SDIO interface chips (https://www.bunniestudios.com/blog/2013/where-usb-memory-sticks-are-born/) that are wire bonded to the NAND flash chips. You get a lot more for the price: instead of $15 for 256MB NOR, its $3 (https://www.digikey.com/short/r77p0922). You also don't need more pins! We always thought that NAND flash required a lot of pins since it comes in 48-TSSOP (https://www.digikey.com/short/8zqbmw31) but turns out that you can get it in a QSPI 8-pin format. That makes it easy to integrate without needing an 8-bit wide memory controller. However, the architectural decisions that give ISSI NAND (https://www.digikey.com/short/jtp8ppdb) the massive size & low cost that we love also make it more complex to use than NOR flash. For one, you can no longer get random access to any byte you like. Instead, an entire page must be read at once into a 2176-byte cache, and then can be accessed. This is fine for most uses except we can't use XIP anymore and there are probably some memory access use cases that don't work nearly as nicely. Also that high density means that bits are more likely to go 'bad' and flip. While you can sorta-kinda get away with not doing error correction or wear leveling on NOR, you absolutely must do error correction and wear leveling on NAND! ISSI includes a simple multi-bit ECC system that can handle repairing up to 8 bits per 2176-byte page. And, every time there's ECC errors, you will need to 'refresh/rewrite' the data to clean it up. That refresh counts against the 60K or 100K write cycle - you are more likely to need wear-level management, even if you don't expect to write that often. Basically, check if your microcontroller SDK has a NAND controller library (https://github.com/D-Buckingham/NAND_flash) that can manage this all for you. So, if you need to level up your storage, with easy-to-use SPI or QSPI-interface, ISSI has many NAND (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/i/issi/serial-nand-flash) options to let you quickly and inexpensively add 1 or 2 gigabits of non-volatile memory with built in ECC support and block cache. DigiKey will be stocking them shortly, sign up (https://www.digikey.com/short/jtp8ppdb) to be notified when they drop into stock mid-next month!…

Full tutorial: https://learn.adafruit.com/lighting-led-nets-with-wled-and-xlights/overview Add hundreds of lights to your home or yard with these fantastic Seed Pixel Nets. Adafruit carries them in a variety of sizes, from 1x1m to 1x6m large, and they are chainable and expandable so no vision is too big. These nets use 12v power, which can be easily handled by the Sparkle Motion microcontroller. It has 4 powered LED outputs, a power converter so you can run 12v or 5v lights, and an onboard microphone, which makes sound-reactive projects a snap. The setup is fairly easy, with no soldering required (though adding connectors can make your life easier). That gives you time to focus on making beautiful sequences and enjoying your pretty lights. This week, we could have saved ourselves some time by pulling out a pocket multimeter a little earlier in our project. We have tons of meters but always come back to our favorite, the Amprobe PM51A (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/amprobe/PM51A/1540507), which has been discontinued. Let's look at what other mini-multimeters are available at DigiKey and some of the options you can choose from. Jepler has been working round the clock to get HSTX DVI (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_dvhstx/blob/main/examples/02texttest/02texttest.ino) output support for the Fruit Jam (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6200) working - this mode is neat because its 'text only' - you get 3-bit color text, it does that by creating a 'resolution' of 91 x 30 characters, you can only set the color and glyph. However, the monitor output is a non-buffered 1280x720, with each scanline generated 'on the fly', so you don't need any SRAM. This could be great for something like a Z-machine emulator (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z-machine) or other text-mode-only computation. Woo! This xscreensaver-like demo shows random lines and colors displaying on a mini 7-inch HDMI monitor (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1667): it's a 320x240 'pixel doubled' display that is running from the Fruit Jam, an RP2350-based mini computer board (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6200). But what's cool is that we're now using the HSTX interface rather than PIO+core bit-banging. That means we now have plenty of extra resources for running the USB host... which is still being worked on. OK, after many hours spent with Claude on writing a driver for the TLV320DAC3100 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/TLV320DAC3100IRHBR/2260591), we finally have it configured using our driver, and playing an MP3 stream on this ESP32. This I2S DAC has a particularly complex PLL and audio-routing system, so it's not one where you can just pipe in I2S data and have it magically play. One nice thing we got working on is the MCLK, which is generated from the BCLK, so it'll work great with anything from an Arduino-compatible to a single-board computer like Raspberry Pi. We're hoping to get the headphone detection working next so that we can turn off the amp when the headphone is plugged in. Also, it should be able to control the volume from the headset buttons. Also, we want to get the internal beep generator going so we can make tones separate from the audio stream for UI notifications. You can 3D print your own custom add-ons for this coat stand from IKEA. 3D Files: https://learn.adafruit.com/ikea-coat-stand These playful 3D printed add-ons are inspired by an early 20th-century public domain cartoon. We think it's a fun blend of practical and whimsical product design that you can make yourself. The “Alganas” hat and coat stand from IKEA features a simple design that stands up-right and doesn't have to be affixed to the wall. The powder-coated metal hooks are perfect for press fitting 3D printed parts which actually offer additional space for extra items. We designed four add-ons that are inspired by elements from that iconic 20th-century public domain cartoon Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------…

Timon is designing a backpack for the Pi Compute Module, and we're stuffing it full of fun features. We need a lot of clearance for the Pi Compute module so we can put parts underneath. Let's look up the matching connectors for the CM4/CM5, what clearances you'll get, pricing, and the availability from DigiKey. See the chosen part on DigiKey: https://www.digikey.com/short/bhj2r04p ----------------------------------------- Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/…
Ladyada explores I2S DACs, testing PCM51xx as a UDA1334A alternative. Work continues on the TLV320DAC3100, we test an AI API interface for setters/getters for Claude with pay per token. A new Pi Compute Module backpack is in progress - And we search for tall connectors for CM4/CM5.
We used to stock a PiCam Module (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5247) that would plug into a Pi CM4 or CM5 - recently we went to restock it, but the vendor hasn't replied to our emails for many months. So, it could be a good time for us to design something that works similarly but with more capabilities. So we tasked Timon (https://github.com/timonsku) with designing something for us - we just said, "Make the best thing ya can," and he delivered! Check this board out that plugs onto the compute module and provides many great accessories: USB connection for bootloading/USB gadget, USB 3.0 host type A for CM5, micro HDMI, micro SD card for data storage on 'Lite modules, camera connection, and mount, two DSI connectors, fan connect, Stemma QT / Qwiic connection, and RTC battery. There's one shutdown button for CM5 and two GPIO buttons plus one LED. Timon's gonna try to add an EYESPI connector for our next rendering so we can get some I2C/SPI/PWM outputs easily. What do you think? We wanted to keep it compact and not too pricey (aiming for under $30 cost. We'll see if we can get it there) but were able to craft fairly complex projects in a small space.
